Anyone Seen National Treasure 2?

I watched it with my fam tonight and kinda don't get all of it.
It was an excellent movie, but what I don't understand is why they had to find the city of gold and how finding the treasure would prove that Thomas Gates didn't plan the assassination against the President.

This is probably such a random topic but thoughts anyone?

I believe, by finding the city of gold, it proved that Thomas Gates' name was only included as a list of names of men who could decipher the code. But, I dunno. I didn't really get it either.

We didn't get it either, but I decided that nothing in that movie was worth thinking about for too long.
