I've been cleaning out my place and I've got a sh!tload of books I'll never read again. Figured I'd lug them up to the Strand and see what I can get for 'em. I was just wondering if anybody here has done it before, and if it's fair. I'm not really looking for much, just enough to rush Evita. :)
It all depends on what you have. In my experience, don't expect more than maybe $5 per book IF they take them back.
I'd like to add that every time I've done it the person behind the counter has been a total impatient, pretentious snot. "UGH! We have about 1,000 copies of this book" "There's a crease in the bottom corner of the back cover. We only take books in excellent condition" Just understand that they may only take half of what you bring in.
Yeah they are the rudest and most pretentious staff you could ever hope to deal with. The prices are "fair" I suppose. Some books you get ten cents for, some you get a dollar or three. Be sure to read their rules on what types of books they take and conditions they need to be in before lugging them down there.

Wow, $5 is pretty good for a lot of books. Around me (we have a lot of used bookstores) you're lucky to get $3. Common and mass paperbacks are more like $1-2 if anything.

In my experience, if you bring a large number of books, they'll go through them all, rejecting the ones they don't want, and then give you on overall price for the ones they take. Thy don't give you book by book pricing.
That's right, After Eight. They'll give you $2 or $3 for books that are less than a year old. Older titles will fetch less.
And yes, they'll be snotty about it.
Still, it's better than just tossing them out.

Yeah, that's why they have the $1 carts outside the store.

Are you for or against capitalism today?

I'd just donate them outright to Housing Works on Crosby street. No money, but good cause and no snobbery. Tax write-off, I think.
