Well, they ARE all gorgeous. Everyone.
We stopped making pretty or good-looking people about ten years ago.

just saw this yesterday. We were blown away.
I have never heard such cheering, and then such silence as we all left the theater.
I have seen nothing in recent memory that moved me like this did, and the timing right after Prop 8 here probably made it even more poignant.
What an amazing human being he was. I am still in a daze. Sean Penn was fantastic, frankly I forgot it was Sean Penn, and really though I was seeing Harvey Milk. Amazing, amazing movie.

While it has all the trappings of the traditional biopic, this is nontheless a very entertaining and well-made film. Van Sant turned out to be the perfect director for this...can you imagine what this would have turned if it had been made back when the idea of a Milk movie was first announced? Try Oliver Stone directing Robin Williams. I'm not kidding.
Penn was terrific, once again disappearing into a role but showing much more warmth and humor than is his want. This is also the first movie I liked Emile Hirsch in. And oh my do I have a boner for Joseph Cross!
For me the most devastating image from the movie was at the very beginning. I have never seen that footage of the gay bars being raided. All those men with their hands covering their faces in shame. We have come a long way. baby.

While no historical drama never gets ALL the facts and details correct, this one does an excellent job at telling the story and engaging the audience. The audience response last night was quite impressive. Everyone needs to see this film.

An entirely excellent and admirable movie. I'd been dreading seeing it, not wanting to be disappointed, but I enjoyed it a great deal. Beautifully made and acted, an ideal piece of thought-provoking political entertainment.
I'm sure Oliver Stone backed out when someone explained to him that Dan White was the bad guy.

Posted: 12/31/08 at 11:03amI just got "The Life of Harvey Milk" bio from Netflix today, so I've been waiting to see that first before I see the film, which I'll probably do tomorrow,

Saw this today. I thought it was terrific. My limited vocabulary prevents me from elaborating.

Saw the movie last night and agree with everyone here. Great film. Sean Penn is such a good actor.
Forgive me if I should know this, but.. do those tapes actually exist?

Well, I just saw it and I honestly loved it. I thought it was more of a docudrama about the birth of the gay movement than a biography about just one man. That was probably the right way to go because making the entire movie just about Harvey Milk would have been to render him as bigger than the movement and that would have completely gone against the message.
I loved the use of archival footage and Sean Penn's performance. I honestly think this is his best performance to date. Really.
My biggest qualm with it, though, was that Dan White was not given nearly enough screen-time. That is such a tragic and fascinating man that he easily could have inspired an entire movie all on his own. Josh Brolin definitely did great with the role but I wish there would have been a few more scenes with him that delved into his psyche. This is probably the only biopic I can remember seeing that I thought deserved both a spin-off and a sequel. I wanted to see White's trial and subsequent suicide.

Posted: 1/26/09 at 6:04pmThe movie finally opened here in the Southtowns this past weekend. I was very discouraged to see only 4 people in the audience. Me and the 3 people I went with. On a positive note, My Bloody Valentine 3-D was sold out!!!

That was my sentiment about the film, but in this thread Stick it to Priest told me the film was about Harvey Milk and not Dan White.
The fact is that Dan White was all about Harvey Milk, and was Milk's assassin, and therefore should have been dealt with in more depth.

Posted: 1/27/09 at 3:10amDan White easily could have inspired his own movie. Brolin tried to get stuff across with subtle facial expressions and such but they could have at least had two or three more scenes with him alone without Milk.

I was given a voter's copy to watch and just finished watching it. I too think a bit more time could have been devoted to Dan White. At the end, it said that Milk's friends cast his ashes out to sea with kool-aid and Doosnbury comics. I am assuming these are things that he really liked. It may be nit picking but I wonder why these things weren't incorporated into the film.
I enjoyed the film. It brought back a lot of memories (Some good and some not so good). Not a great film, but good. JMO

Posted: 2/7/09 at 6:19pmYes, the "to be played if I'm assassinated" tapes really exist.
#93re: Anyone want to discuss MILK?
Posted: 2/7/09 at 6:26pmI didn't know about the tapes, or maybe I had heard about them a long time ago, but I figured they must exist since they kept flashing back to him making them. I was trying to figure out at what point he started making them.

So I've basically been full on supporting this movie from the moment I saw the trailer. I hadn't even seen the actual movie (purely because it wasn't playing many places and it just kept not working out for me to see it in theaters)
But I finally just decided to find it online, just to get it WATCHED once and for all. And... I can't even...it was so. damn. good.
Were there little minor things about it that maybe could have been strengthened? Sure, there are in every film. But all in all, I just would kill to sit EVERY single person in the world down and make them watch this movie. It was incredible. And I think it couldn't have come at a better time than right now, on the heels of Prop 8.
So yeah, the movie in general.. much as I love Slumdog, how in the HECK could anyone think Slumdog was better than this movie?? HOW??? It really, truly was THE best movie of the year. And there were a LOT of great movies this year.
Performances were brilliant ALL around. Sean Penn TOTALLY deserved that Oscar. James Franco and Emile Hirsch= completely wonderful. Josh Brolin was fantastic and very VERY scary/creepy.
So yeah, I cannot praise this movie enough. It's.. rather rare that I get super emotional at movies. This one REALLY got to me.

"Dan White easily could have inspired his own movie."
It could be called TWINKIE.
But that might be interpreted as something else.
I have no problem with this creature being relegated to the background of what the true story is and should be.

Best film I've seen in such a long time and Penn's performance was stunning. He brought one of my heros to life, and so deserved his oscar. I think it deserved to win best picture and best director as well. What Van Sant did was remarkable, imo.
I completely disagree with the notion that White's character needed more "screen time". The film was a celebration of Harvey, not the story of how he died. Plenty of White's story is told to show his motivations, there is nothing more to it. The murder of Milk and Moscone was perpetrated in cold bloood by a calculating, sad and pathetic man.
Actually, the relationship between the two characters was wonderfully portrayed thanks to the amazing screenplay and performances.

Saw it today, and was in awe. Penn is so good, its scary !!!
I love "Slumdog..", but "Milk" could have easily won for Best Picture.
Simply a great film !!!

Posted: 3/1/09 at 7:41pmMILK was much better than SLUMDOG and the former deserved both Best Picture and Best Director award--not to mention a nod for Emile Hirsch's brilliant supporting performance.
