Apartment hunt in NYC

Because the best way to find an apartment in the city is KNOWING someone who knows someone who's best friend's cat's kitten's new Mommy has a friend who is leasing an apartment...

SO, with that in mind..

Anyone know anyone (or yourself) who is leasing a moderate (read: student) priced apartment in NYC, preferably around the village?

Thanks for the help, y'all. Or heck, maybe this just provides amusement for thos of you with steady apartments!

Good luck.

I live in the village. What do you want to live there for? Pick a nicer neighborhood.

My friend is in a lovely two-bedroom rent controlled apt. ($1100) on Perry Street. I want to kill her!

blueroses - she pays $1100, or the total monthly cost for her true two bedroom on perry street is $1100?

re: Apartment hunt in NYC

JAC, she and her husband pay $1100 in rent. Cable, Internet, etc. are of course extra. If you meant that her portion was $1100 (i.e. a roommate paid an additional $1,100, nope. It's $1100 in total)

re: Apartment hunt in NYC

But say she had a roommate, each of them would pay (before utilities) 550, yes?

Interesting. If anyone's looking for me, I'll be jumping out of my 40th story office window...

You're not going to jump off a building, too, are you? Do you think we should check in on JAC, before she does something irrational?

re: Apartment hunt in NYC

No worries - but I'd dress up in drag if it meant I could pay $1100 for my 2 bedroom in the village. My roommate and I definitely pay more than that...EACH....ouch

re: Apartment hunt in NYC

At first I thought this thread was titled "Apartment hunk in NYC" and thought maybe some hottie needed a roommate or maybe there was some kind of "rent the apartment, get the man for free" deal. Imagine my disappointment when I took a closer look. Anyway, carry on.

re: Apartment hunt in NYC

I live in the W. Village and love this neighborhood. It's the best. However, I don't think one bedrooms can be had for under $2200 these days. Mine would rent for at least $3000 if I moved out. If you want to wait that long~ Oh, but by then it would probably be $10,000.

re: Apartment hunt in NYC

They're REALLY lucky, because they've been able to save towards purchasing something. She's been there since she graduated college (I think in '96), with a series of roommates before she met her husband. It's a nice place in a great neighborhood, but it's not very spacious and there is a baby on the way. They don't want to give it up but even with all they have been able to save, they can't afford to touch anything in the area. There's a Sex and the City "tour" on the block every once in a while that annoys them, because apparently one of the brownstones across the street was the site for Carrie's apartment.
