Are superhero fans just mindlessly programmed?

I have been waiting very patiently for Hollywood's obsession with superhero movies to die down, already. Or at least for a good superhero movie to come out. And that never seems to happen. Even the recent reviled BATMAN V. SUPERMAN movie is projected to rake in millions in the triple digit range.

When does it end?

It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

When the critics started panning it, 100K+ fan boys hurried up and started clicking that they "liked" the movie to gets its score up over 70%... before a single screening occurred on Thursday night.

The movie is not nearly as bad as the critics make it sound. I'd personally give it a 6 on a scale of 1-10. There's a lot of typical Zach Snyder "meh" but there's a lot of "wow" moments too. Affleck actually turned out the best Batman I've seen in live action, and Wonder Woman got HUGE applause, just for her entrance alone. Eisenberg as Lex was the weakest part of the film for me. No idea what they were going for with him but he didn't work at all. Overall is was pretty good. Very different from the Marvel formula.

There is no way this wasn't going to have a big opening weekend. Superman and Batman fighting is a bigger deal than the Fantastic Four could ever be. I doubt it will have strong legs though, so this is why WB was smart to release it worldwide on the same weekend. It will fizzle as mixed word of mouth gets out.

I think Spider-Man 2 (2004) with Tobey Maguire is one of the best superhero movies to date. The two Marc Webb reboots with Andrew Garfield pale by comparison. That said, Zach Snyder is a hack who couldn't direct traffic. Man of Steel was a colossal mess! And although I haven't seen it yet, based on the reviews and word of mouth, Batman v Superman sounds like more of the same.

There are so many characters and so many stories to tell from all these comic series and the majority do well at the box office so it's not going to end anytime soon.

It's not like anyone is forcing you to go see them so if you don't like them then just don't go see them?

I still have the "Man of Steel" headache; insufferable, long, loud, larded with pretentiousness and far too little respect for an audience's entertainment needs. This sounds like more of the same, er, less, er too much of a bad thing. Many people won't care, making the movie's critical reception close to irrelevant. If they prove anything, these bloated, windy echo-chambers, it's that in a post 9/11 world the last thing we want to be schooled in is ... a post 9/11 world. We get it. Now go back to telling a story, and helping us access it with smiles on our faces.

I have a Zack Snyder allergy, so I won't be seeing it (didn't see Man of Steel, either). It's sad that I used to be the exact target audience for this sort of thing, but now they're alienating even me.

If there are so many stories in the comic book universe, why do so many superhero movies have at the template level, the exact same story?

Superhero fans are diverse bunch - look at the nerds in that AV Club article's comments section; they hate Snyder.

And Borstalboy, the same stories happen over and ****ing over in tentpole superhero movies because a $400 million budget makes studios even more risk-averse than they usually are. Also, this. Actual comics tell the stories of, oh, cops enforcing the law in a world where eating chicken is outlawed. A PI pastiche starring a floating amoeba thing. The last man on earth and his pet monkey going on an epic road trip with a government agent and a cranky geneticist after every other mammal with a Y chromosome suddenly dies.

Some people - a small but loud group - are "superhero fans" in the sense that the success of anything with the Superman logo stamped on it feels like a success for them - it's part of their identity, so they're the ones giving rave "reviews" before they even see the movie. Other people aren't paying much attention and will just watch this movie opening weekend because they want something to do and this film has the names of two pop culture icons in the title. What will be telling is not the first weekend, but whether this turd has any staying power. Even by tentpole standards, this movie was expensive as hell.
