Growing up in Washington, DC during the Cuban missle crisis, our teachers made us learn all the location of the fallout shelters in our neighborhood. To this day, when I see one of those old signs on a building, I make a note of the location.....just in case. Talk about growing up paranoid.

Little black and white square shaped television screens - all powered by vacuum tubes that had a tendency to burn out just when your favorite show came on. Of course you only had 3 channels to choose from (NBC, ABC, and CBS) and they only came through periodically. It wasn't at all uncommon to find a test pattern on your screen
with the words "We Are Experiencing Technical Difficulties: Please Stand By" superimposed on the image. My sister and I would immediately jump up and stand on either side of the TV and laugh hysterically at our wonderful sillyness.

ODD-OGG, ODD-OGG Half turtle and half frog! It was a toy from the early 60's.
I went to school with a girl named Debbie Ogg, poor thing, she suffered mightly because of this toy. Recess was filled with the chant of "Debbie Ogg, Debbie Ogg, half turtle and half frog."

Posted: 7/19/07 at 1:19pmOh yes! With a picture of a flag waving in the breeze. Later on that was replaced by Air Force jets flying by. (I don't know why they always signed off with the Air Force). There was no TV at all until they signed on again the next morning.

We had channel 9 instead of 10.
In the early 60's we had Educational Television - now known as PBS. In DC the call letters for channel 26 are still WETA - Washington's Educational Television association. I think it only aired a few hours of programming a day.
