Are you out to your classmates?
#1Are you out to your classmates?
Posted: 4/14/07 at 7:35pmI outed myself by accident today to a classmate. I feel so odd, she didn't care at all though. But Are you out to your classmates? How did you come out?

I don't think of it in terms of being out or not. AT all. I don't know why people think that way.
I'm myself all the time. If people guess, then they don't have to ask. If people do ask, I tell them. If we're talking, I'll just say "My boyfriend" and not beat around the bush or anything.
I always assume that people just know I'm gay, but I don't define myself by it, and I honestly don't see why it matters.
Just last week I found out that people at work actually DIDN'T know I was gay. I was shocked.

Posted: 4/14/07 at 7:53pmI am not saying it's a big deal, I don't feel the need to talk about, because I am not THAT close with my classmates, but today was weird, because I didn't plan to come out, yet it happened, just wanted to hear about other experiences like mine, etc.

i wasn't out in high school, but i wasn't in the closet either.
i say i wasn't "out" beacuse i never stood up and made the announcement "can i have everyone's attention? i like girls. thank you have have a plesent day". i didn't have a backpack covered in rainbow pins/stickers/patches/ribbons/keychains like some people did.
but i say i wasn't "in the closet" either beacuse i was active in my school's gsa and helped organize the day of silence my senior year.
i didn't make a point to tell anyone except my two best friends who kind of knew anyways.

That is the best way for 'it' to happen..
If it's just a part of the conversation, and no one is making a HUGE deal about it, then you should be happy!
And I haven't had class-mates in over 20 years...

Posted: 4/14/07 at 8:29pmMuscle, you don't need to "come out" of anything if you're not inside something in the first place. Just be you. Don't go with the assumption that everyone is automatically straight until proven gay, and don't expect people to assume that about you.

-I am definitly me, and I never mentioned I go with any assumptions.
#9re: Are you out to your classmates?
Posted: 4/14/07 at 9:32pmWell you said that you came out to your classmates today, so you clearly thought that they thought you were straight up until today, correct? Otherwise, what would there be to come out of?

"what would there be to come out of?"
There's a difference in them knowing, and them guessing.
I came out my junior year, and people quit teasing me about it.

Exactly.
Why do people define themselves by their orientation?
#13re: Are you out to your classmates?
Posted: 4/14/07 at 9:47pmOh my, I came out to one girl, because I showed her a blog I wrote and it said I was gay, I don't define myself by my orientation. It's just something that happened and it caught me off guard, because I don't really talk about it, since Im single and it just never pops out when I talk with my classmates, not like I hide it or anything, we talk about school stuff and tests, etc.

No.
My friend Amanda, who I trust and shares with me [She is BI and or Lesbian, I'm not sure which.]
I don't want the people I go to school with to know.
Most of them are assholes and who already assume that I am
And don't need any kind of clarifcation from me.
My parents don't know.
My dad would kill me.
My mom would be okay with it I guess.
She has friends who are gay and bi.
I think college is when I'll be able to fully feel free enough.
I just don't feel free enough yet.
