WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Army is preparing to notify about 5,600 retired and discharged soldiers who are not members of the National Guard or Reserve that they will be involuntarily recalled to active duty for possible service in Iraq or Afghanistan, Army officials said Tuesday.
What do you think about this?

the word "involuntarily" scares me. This word is as scary as the word "draft" which I'm hearing again. I don't agree with killing and fighting ESPECIALLY in this war. I am a male within the draft ages and my stomach turns every time I hear the word on the news.
That's ok--we're gay. The military doesn't want us. Oh, that's right--we're at war. They stop discharging gays when there is a war.

Same with me, Matt. Ever since I was little, during Desert Storm, I have been afraid of being draft into the Army. I would find a way out of it...mental issues.
JRB, please delete that post! It's very rude to out people on these boards!
Gays aren't safe, unfortunately. Neither are women. Or at least we won't be for much longer. I'm not old enough yet, but I will be next year, and I know the war's not going to be over by then.
As for the army recalling former members, well, I can pretty much say that I think it's bullsh*t. If you've served your time, you've served your time, and that's that. The government has no right to subject anyone to "involuntary" service. Yeah, so maybe serving in the military is a way to "give something back." But that does not mean that people who have already served should be forced to leave their families and risk their lives for something that they do not believe in.
*steps off of soapbox*
That little squirrel is all packed and on it's way to Canada.
Haha...you think you're kidding, Matt...
Did they mention an age limit? I suppose I should re-read the article, but did they mention that people over *insert age here* would not be called on?
Many people are getting upset about a possible draft but I don't think they realise it still is very unlikely.
The last draft (Vietnam) took place because HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of Americans were dying every day in combat. Our numbers now are no where near how serious it would need to be. Also a draft needs to be voted on and passed in DC. If this did happen all of the US forces possible would need to have been used in Iraq etc already. That would means thousands of people getting killed each day. The draft law works so that: 18 year old men are first drafted. If they need more people they start with 19 year olds, then 20 and so on... unless a huge drastic event happens I see this as very unlikely.
All of u too young to remember the Vietnam War, Repeat after me:
And it's one two three,
What are we fighting for,
Who cares I don't give a damn
Next stop is Iran
And it's five six seven
open up the pearly gates
Well it aint no use to wonder why
Whooppe we're all gonna die!
HELL,NO WE WON'T GO!
HELL,NO WE WON'T GO!
the oldies but goodies.
HELL NO WE WON'T GO!

And just to tie it all together, sabrelady, that song was featured in the Broadway musical, Story Theatre, as well as the BBC production of Tales of the City, currently being workshopped as a musical.
See? Everything relates to musical theatre.
ok. So I'm certainly not defending this action, but just to defend what is actually happening, the people they're recallig still have reserve obligations. There's an article on nytimes.com that is a bit better than the cnn one and it mentions this. So it is an involuntary call in that these people are being required to fulfill a duty, but it's one of which they were aware.
In a perverse way this is good. Do u think that 18 yr old+ won't vote now if they feel the threat ( incorrect or not) of military service? So long George, we hardly knew ye!
