Audience Laughter During the Gay Scenes in Brokeback Mountain?

YouWantitWhen???? --- Bravo! A very Yoda-wise post.
I'm glad to read this. The "theory" of gay acceptance and the "practice" of it, are two different things, and it's tough for people to own up to it. Thanks for being so honest here.

Posted: 1/22/06 at 12:54pmLaurenB-you get the giggles when someone's in pain? And you're a compassionate person? Not in my book. Perhaps you've never been in enough pain to see that it isn't funny.

...Or perhaps LaurenB can't sort out her emotions enough to do anything but giggle. It might just be too much for her to deal with.
LaurenB---Try to deal with it, if you can, rather than giggle next time. It's part of growing up. Go ahead and cry, or vomit, or get angry, or scared... but your "giggling" is actually cutting you off from dealing with it. Oh... and thanks for being so honest about it. Discussing it is the first step in understanding it.

Posted: 1/22/06 at 1:03pmPoppa, somehow a post I made didn't make it-yes, it is hurtful when someone is laughing at a film you find to be serious. I hate that. But to stand there and laugh when someone's writhing in pain is the cruelist thing I can think of. It's called sadism.

Posted: 1/22/06 at 1:06pmMy theater got laughs at the part where Randy Quad's character saw the two boys through hs binoculars, when Alma saw them kissing, and when Ennis made some comment about he and Jack staying out all night and the next shot was of a motel. It seemed to me that people laugh at these scenes because they have seen many similar situations in sitcoms and such that are meant to be funny. Even though these events were in the context of a serious film people have the instinct to laugh.

Lauren, after that last post of yours, I totally understand why you laugh at people in pain.
And no, breaking your leg and being in therapy doesn't even begin to compete with other's pain. I can give you a list of my own experiences that will have you so hysterical that you may even experience pain. And with that, I leave this debate, now that I see what I was dealing with.

LaurenB---Okay, now you're defensive...
But you should also know that your immaturity is growing "louder" on these posts by the minute.

Excuse me, but if you re-read your own posts (best12bars), it was other people such as yourself who used labels such as immature, ignorant, sadistic. Seems you can give it, but you can't take.
