Okay, what's the general consensus on auditioning for a show with a song from a show you just finished? I have an audition coming up, and I wanted to use another character's song from a show i was in previously. Does anyone know what directors think of this? Is it generally accepted, or frowned upon? Thanks.
I've done this before, but are you auditioning with the same director? People tell me to choose a song with the same genre as the musical you're auditioning for.
The show's I'm referring to have different directors, different companies, and both are 50's musicals.

If Director A has no idea that you were just in Director B's show singing Song C, then there's absolutely no problem.
And have fun -- Grease and Bye Bye Birdie are both tremendous fun. :P
I would not. Especially if you put this show on your resume.

sing whatever you want as long as its the right genre. The director is interested in seeing you sing your best. They aren't analyzing saying "that kid just did that show...", they don't care at all. Sing whatever you are confident in and whatever makes you sound great. The only real stipulation in auditioning is to stay away from songs that are from the show you are auditioning for, unless they say you can in the casting notice. But if its high school or college, you can sing from the show whether or not its stated that you can, unless of course, it says specifically not to. But don't stress out about singing from a show you were just in, it doesn't matter. Everyone i know, including myself, who audition and work in NYC sing from shows they've done, especially if its perfect for the show, whether from a long time ago or recently. Its CERTAINLY NOT frowned upon, its not that serious.
YES! YES! YES! OF COURSE! What other song would you be more comfortable with, more prepared with?
Most actors have their "staple songs" that they use for every audition, and I guarentee many of them are from shoes they worked in.
Shoes? :P
Yeah then do the same song, I mean, like someone on this board said, you'll have more experience and feel much more comfortable singing the song. Oooh I did Bye Bye Birdie this past summer! And [unfortunately] doing Grease at my high school. Hahaha Good show, just not the one I would do for my senior year.
Well, if I put it on me resume, I wouldn't. but if you didn't, id say go with it.
They director doesn't care if it is from a show you just did as long as you sing it well. If you don't do it well then it may be bad to use it. If its the same styled show then go for it!!!!!

I agree. If you sing it well, same genre, and not the same director, Go for it.
I would like to expand on this question if that's all right...
What about doing monologues from shows you were recently in for BFA auditions? Two of the pieces I'm considering are from plays I've done in the past year, but neither are the part that I played. If I do one (or both... but probably not both) of them, will the auditioners think that I'm simply using another person's direction? I'm going for an entirely new perspective on both pieces, but the auditioners wouldn't know that.
I agree with those who say that it depends on the director...He/she knows what you are capable of singing... the more important choice in song is if it fits the character you are auditioning for and the musical style of the show....good luck!
