Saw this last night. Liz is a hoot. And it has some great lines!
Gloria Wandrous: Mama, face it: I was the slut of all time
-----------------------------------------------------------
Gloria Wandrous: You act like a man who's expecting his wife back in town.
Weston Liggett: Look, Gloria, I have to spend at least tonight with her.
Gloria Wandrous: A good night's sleep will be the best thing for you
------------------------------------------------------------
Gloria Wandrous: I think I'll get cleaned up and do my nails.
Mrs. Fanny Thurber: Yes, sharpen them.
Gloria Wandrous: For you, Mrs. Thurber, I would.

And how hot was Laurence Harvey? This is my new favorite guilty pleasure!
...and she won a friggin' Oscar for it!
Mostly because she was dying at the time.
...but then she lived!
LOL. I read that she hates this movie and still denounces it.
Plus her husband Michael Kidd died that same year and she stole Eddie Fischer from his wife a few months later. When she ended up in the hospital just before the Oscars it was like a perfect storm of PR.
Plus, this was her last movie at MGM under contract.
What a way to go out!
EDIT: And I don't think her husband choreographed "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers." At least not intentionally.
Read the book. So much better...and you don't have to deal with that Eddie Fisher...thing.
Seriously though, she was really good. I'm saddened by the fact that she gave up acting so young. I would love to see another great performance by her. But she's a too looney these days.
She didn't really give up acting at a young age. I believe that her last film role was in "The Flintstone's" from 1994. She's done quite a few tv movies since then.
She has made tens of millions of dollars for AIDS Research. That's more satisfying to her, than acting.
Taz-MIke Todd, not MIchael Kidd!!! LOL
Anyway, I think I uh, I mean, Liz looked her most gorgeous in that film. And I loved the film.

If you run into her somewhere Taz, ask her if she's going to get Married again....
LOL Jane! thank you so much for the correction.
I know she didn't technically give up acting neal, but I think you know what I mean.
I was referring to career longevity like Vanessa Redgrave for example.
Laurence Harvey made so many friends in the movie biz.
Jane Fonda: Acting with [Laurence] Harvey is like acting by yourself - only worse.
---
Lee Remick: The tales I can tell of working with him are too horrendous to repeat.
---
LARRY KING: And he liked people who knew what they were doing. I remember sitting with him watching a scene from "Manchurian Candidate" with Laurence Harvey and he said: Well, there's an actor; Laurence Harvey, there's an actor.
SHIRLEY MACLAINE: Right, yes.
LARRY KING: So you liked him a lot?
SHIRLEY MACLAINE: Oh, I loved him. Not Laurence. I didn't like him.

^Shirley McClain was robbed of the Oscar that year. Liz was good but Shirley in "The Apartment" was so much better.
Liz was good but Shirley in "The Apartment" was so much better.
Agreed.
My biggest problem with Shirley in The Apartment is that she wasn't dying in real life.
Liz, on the other hand, was (or so they thought).
And that's the best reason to give out an Oscar.
To bring someone back from the brink of death.
Liz got it for a lot of reasons that had nothing to do with her performance, but I think she blew Shirley out of the water. In fact I think the only reason Shirley even got nominated was b/c she got swept up in the "Apartment" wave.
My beautiful former boss Dina Merrill is in this one! I've never seen it but it's on my list.
