DG, it really kind of did mess me up when I was a kid. Until I was about ten or so, I cried every night when it was time to go to bed. It's not all that bad now, really, because it only happens when I go into a sound sleep--which isn't often. Maybe twice a week. Every night last week, though, because it was the week after finals, lol. Couldn't help falling asleep then.
JerseyGirl, that's why I never did the sleepover thing. My mom thought my "attacks", as she calls them, would scare everyone too much.

In all seriousness, is the night terror thing something that can be treated, either through medication or some form of therapy? This seems awfully impactful on the ability to live a normal life (whatever 'normal' is!)
I also have the dream on occasion that I never graduated from high school and have to go back. I am older than everyone else and it's horrible. I think that stems from the fact that my hippy parents waited until I was 6 to put me in kindergarten. I graduated from HS just after I turned 19. I always felt weird about that.

I suffer from dreams like that too. I dream that I haven't passed all my undergraduate courses, and that there's one class I completely forgot I was enrolled in, and the exam is coming up.
Then I wake up and see my degree hanging on the wall, and I take a deep breath.

DG, I think people usually grow out of them. Since I didn't, at least one doctor recommended tranquilizers. My parents nixed that idea pretty quickly, though. Besides that, all they can really do is try to keep me safe. There are locks on the outside of my windows and door (to keep me from being able to "escape", which happened only a few times). My mom always tries to have a paper bag for me to breathe into (in case of a panic attack). I don't know if there's any treatments for it really, you just hope you grow out of it eventually.
I was told recently that lack of sleep can cause night terrors to get worse. Which kind of sucks for me, since the whole reason I refuse to sleep for 2,3 days in a row is because of the night terrors that I know will happen.

There was a really big article in the New York Times Magazine a while back about night terrors, sleepwalking, sleep-eating, and other unusual sleeping behaviors. I always remembered the anecdotes about people eating things like raw meat and bullion cubes while sleeping.
I remember hearing a story about some woman that kept gaining weight and couldn't figure out why. They finally realized she was binging in her sleep.

tacos - this is going to sound harsh, but unfortunately it's the truth - those that are currently looking out for your welfare may not always be able to be there. I think you owe it to yourself to do some investigation, and see what steps you can take to try and get yourself some relief, that doesn't depend on someone else being there when you are vulnerable.
If I may ask, how old are you? Because if you are still relatively young, then the urgency wouldn't be that great.

Every so often I'll have this dream: For some reason, the dream starts right before I fall asleep, that limbo between awake and sleeping, ya know? And I'll be doing something as simple as walking, and then I'll fall. When I begin to fall, I jump up in bed or twitch--this wakes me up. It's really odd.
I used to be able to figure out that I was dreaming right in the middle of my dream. I loved those. Now I sometimes dream that I am having a baby. I usually figure out that it's a dream somewhere in the middle. I hate that dream...lol.
Sometimes I try to make myself dream about a certain thing, because apparently some people can do that. It hasn't happened though.
I am one of those people who usually realize my dream is a dream and then kind of...mold it into what I want it to be. It's kind of nice. Only occasionally do I have a dream that I have no control over. In most of my dreams I am looking at myself from an outside view, do most people dream like this? I've always found it strange that I can look at myself but not BE myself in dreams.

oo wow i've had so many scary dreams
these are some that stick out
i was in my "house" in my room and there was a party going on at my house, a lot of relatives and neighbors...and one of my friends was in my room with me. we looked outside for a second and saw a weird looking man ni a trenchcoat right outside my house. for some reason we thought this was funny so we looked out of the window again and he was staring back at us. we both jumped onto my bed which was away from the window and got really freaked out but were still laughing. then we looked out one more time, and when we did, he was climbing up the side of my house really fast. me and my friend were just standing there in awe until he came to the window and opened it up, when we started running. i was running so fast and there was ont point where my friend went one way and i went the other, and of course he followed me...and when i turned around he was holding a butcher knife. i kept running and running past all the people and company that were just standing there doing nothing, and finally i tripped...he caught up to me and i saw his hand go up about to stab me with the butcher knife but i woke up
another bad dream i had when i was sick....
i was VERY sick when i had this dream, and i'm guessing i was dehydrated, but i woke up in the middle of the night very very very very parched, to the point where i felt like i was going to die if i didn't get any water...i was too sick to get up though and i also couldn't get the energy to speak so i couldn't call for anyone to get me water. i guess i fell asleep again and dreamt that i was at a nice restauarant with my family. we were all talking and finally the waitor comes with tall glassses of ice cold water. he puts the water down on the table and it looks like heaven, and as soon as i put my lips to the glass and i'm abotu to hve the water, i wake up. this probably happened about 30 times..over, and over, and over, and over again, it just wouldn't stop, i acutally started crying because i was so thirsty...finally i got up the energy to scream, i didn't even call anyone name i just started screaming, and my parents woke up and got me some water
another scary dream...
i had a dream that i was in my house at night and all of a sudden i saw red flashing lights coming from across the street. i looked outside and there were ambulances, police cars, helicopters, and these soldier looking people all outside. i went upstairs to tell my parents that something was going on across the stret but when i went upstairs they were in my brothers room with the lights off huddled in a corner, my parents, my brother, and my sister, all just hugging eachother tightly and covering their ears. when i went up to them my dad was like rachel come over here close your eyes and cover your ears. at this point i was really scared but before i covered my ears i heard the ambulances and helicopters start calling our name saying that we had to come outside. this part is a little blurry to me but we went outside and eveything was gone, so we were all releived, but then as w were walking down the street, we saw a helicopter that was getting closer and closer to us, so we all started running to go hide. before we coudl the helicopter landed with all of these soldiers marching out...and when the soldiers got closer i coudld see that they were nazis, they all had swatsikas on their coats. i started running away really really fast because one of them was chasing me, and suddenly this rope appeared. i went over to the rope to try to climb it and as soon as the nazi grabbed my foot i woke up

It wasn't scary, but last night I dreamed that I was stage manager for a show in college. I had a headseat, but did not have a cue book, so I could not call the cues. Then at intermission I was backstage and I only had a robe to wear. (Freud Help!)
I actually love these kind of dreams because you are taken to your past,.
PJ, I do that too.
I had a dream the night before my husband's birthday. A year ago on my husband's birthday my grandmother passed away. Well this year the night before his birthday I dreamed that I was sitting in her living room with her and she reached over and held my hand and told me not to worry about it and to be happy and have a good day. It was so vivid that I can remember the rough feel of her sweater as I hugged her and could smell her perfume.
I have never had a recurring dream, but the worse nightmare I've ever had was the one everyone my age dreads to dream about: The First Day of School.
"I'm not in Bambi and I'm not blonde!" - Idina Menzel
Hm....I'm always myself when I dream... I'm never a person watching it.
Two weeks after my friend broke up with her boyfriend, I had a dream that he was chasing me around the school with a knife trying to kill me. That was five years ago, and I honest to God haven't talked to him since, even though I've had multiple classes with him.
One time, my best friend had a dream that we had a pep rally at school. I apparently said that someone on the basketball team was black, they said I was being racist, and I got the electric chair. That was reassuring!
I also had a dream that Jennifer Lopez was my aunt. That was a little scary.

PJ, that EXACT same thing happens to me. doesnt it always seem to be your right leg??
few recurring ones that freak me out everytime:
- i'm losing my teeth... but it's like theyre stuck together. almost like i'm chewing gum and its all stringy and pulling my teeth out.. apparently it means i don't have control over some situation in my life
- 1 leg is longer than the other... i don't know... i don't get where that one comes from
- i'm chasing after something but it keeps being pulled back... what's freaky is something like this happened in REAL LIFE... last week a car was driving down a steet backwards like they were backing up... so they were facing me and i was following them. i was with a friend and almost starting crying, so i pulled over till they were done... it freaked me out too much
I hate the nightmares, where you realize you are dreaming, and try to scream to wake yourself up.....and you can't, yet you know you can, but it doesn't happen.......then a terrifying screech comes out of me and I wake up to see my partner looking at me with that "you woke me up" look........and the always pleasant "SHUT UP" comment....Oy

i remember one that has me afraid of deep, open water to this day.
i was swimming in my cousins pool and all of a sudden im climbing up this really tall ladder in their jacuzzi to get to the diving board (they dont have one, let alone one thats about 25 feet tall). and i got to the top and looked down, and it wasnt the deep end of their pool - it was deep, dark dark blue water, resembling the ocean. and i just stood their freaked out. deep open water still makes me cringe and twitch to this day. man if i had had that dream before i went on their relatives boat with about a foot of distance between me and the water...*shudders*
years later, i still hate open water like that.

It's not really dream, but it happens right before I fall asleep. Often, when I'm like seconds away from drifting off, I'
ll suddenly have this notion that I'm falling. It's like I'm having a dream and my dream self is falling. My entire body will give this jerk and I'll be wide awake again. It freaks me out.
