Alec Wilder's "Did you Ever Cross Over to Snedens?" is one of the saddest songs I know. Andrea Marcovicci recorded it on her Mabel Mercer album.

yep. Sarah Beth is an amazing song..
so i may get ridiculed for this but I Will Come to You and With You in Your Dreams, both by Hanson, are amazing songs.
I'd also like to add:
Danny Boy (the best recording is on a CD called "Celtic Women")
You Raise Me Up (see above...screw that Josh Groban crap)
Truly, Madly, Deeply-Savage Garden
Remember Me This Way-Jordan Hill
Crap Jaily! I was just about to post that!
Wow, you guys have great taste in music. Some of the songs suggested, I already had. Great minds think alike. I downloaded a lot of songs so far. Let's keep them coming.
Merry Christmas!

Maybe it's just me, but the Finale Ultimo from Camelot is so...well, it's sad, but it's something else I can't put my finger on. Hopeful, almost.

OOOOO O O O O OO OO OO OOO OOO, I almost forgot!!
YOU HAVE to check out Regina Spektor. She is very new, but so good. I need to get her CD.

You can hear clips and watch her music video. She has a different, but AMAZING voice! HEr songs, even when happy, make me want to cry. They are so light and summer like. It makes me think of that time of the day when the sun is stting and that orange hue is over everything and it is cool, but warm in the sun.
so good. I LOVE this thread, thank you for starting it! And I am glad you enjoy Tori Amos!
The saddest song I've ever heard is "Jane Fakes a Hug" by The Wrens, which is about the breakup of a marriage. Also, Elliott Smith's entire catalogue is laden with beatiful/achingly sad songs.
Since everyone was so helpful with their song recomindations for sad and beautiful songs, I thought I'd share some of my favorite artists and songs with you guys.I hope you check them out.
David Grey- This Years Love and Gathering Dust
Eva Cassidy
Counting Crows- Colorblind
Silverchair
Bob Seger- Long Way Home
Biff Naked-Lucky
Lifehouse-Eyerything and Take Me Away(Acoustic)
Remy Zero-Shattered
Kelly Clarkson-Beautiful Disaster

beautiful

Evanecence-Sollitude
LeAnn Rimes-Please Remember
Fisher-I Will Love You
Jars of Clay

Bump!
Let That Be Enough is really beautiful, I think. By Jars of Clay and Switchfoot. It was Disney movie, I think.
Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word - Elton John and Blue.
In the Arms of an Angel - Sarah McLachlan (Her voice is just so depressing ANYWAY)
Tears in Heaven - Eric Clapton
Lots of good Korean songs too. Lee Soo Young has some great songs.
And there is this one song (translated, it means Fatal Poison), but it's just SO great.

"That I Would Be Good" (Alanis Morissette) -- methinks the live version from the MTV acoustic show is better than the studio recording
"Deep Water" (Jewel)
"Frozen" (Madonna)
"Isobel" (Dido)
"0% Interest" (Jason Mraz)
"Plane" (Jason Mraz)
"Complainte De La Butte" (Rufus Wainwright)
