I saw this movie six times, and am HEARTBROKEN that Annette lost. Have any of you fallen as madly in love with it as I?
(And HOW about that Tom Sturridge? JESUS, he's the most perfect looking boy I have ever seen)

Posted: 3/4/05 at 1:01pmI feel exactly the same way. I doubt that the majority of the Oscar voters actually saw it. If they had, things would have turned out differently. I think that Bening gave the performance of her life in this one.

It's okay, it was last month anyway.
I loved her in this movie as well, and yes, Tom is perfect.

i missed this film when it was here. And isn't Irons also in CALLAS FOREVER, which i also missed?
i Image Googled Sturridge, very attractive. Here's a link of press coverage of the opening, where he is pictured:

Posted: 3/4/05 at 5:23pmActually; most academy voters did see it. The film was made widely available on dvd to anyone voting for any of the awards this season and it was made available early on. From talking to others at some of the screenings I can say that we were all blown away by Hilary Swank. She won farelly and was the favorite among her peers. I likek Annete Benings performance. but didn't think it was that special even to merrit a nomination.

dang, i hate HTML. Why didn't the link work?
if you care to, Image Google "sturridge" and you can find the premiere pics.

"but didn't think it was that special even to merrit a nomination."
And Swank's was? While "M$B" may have been the role of Swank's short career (I wasn't crazy about her work in that, but...), "Being Julia" was the best performance of Bening's career. And that's hardly a comparison.
#11re: Being Julia
Posted: 3/4/05 at 6:51pmYes honey. Swanks was. And obviously the other members of the academy agreed with me.

My opinion still stands. Besides, the Academy has been "wrong" many, many times before. Swank had the least-dimensional part of the bunch.
And, if you're going to be rude, please do not call me honey. I say that with all due respect.

Sweetheart,
I guess you would call a part that required extreme physical training, and yet quiet raw emotion, honesty and truth not very dimensional??????? Or maybe it says something about you that the only thing that connects is a broad comedic turn like Annete Benings? ( which by the way she was brilliant in.. and let me clarify that before anyone puts words in my mouth). But anyway; I will respect your opinion and please note I meant no disrespect in calling you honey. Believe it or not I was trying to be nice.

DAME-
If you honestly mean what you say, then I apologize.
I just don't see why Hilary Swank's role got nominated, that's all. True, she physically worked hard for the part, but I felt that the role was, arguably, the easiest role out of the nominated performances. Swank projected lovable determination and athleticism, but that's about it. For me, her role never took off. She did, however, get one great monologue.
There was nothing she did in that movie that Uma Thurman didn't do in "Kill Bill", except stronger. Physical training? Check. Raw emotion? Check. Bringing gravity and depth to a role without much dialogue? Check.
"Or maybe it says something about you that the only thing that connects is a broad comedic turn like Annete Benings?"
Meaning what? Correct me if I'm wrong, but the role of Julia Lambert was a highly emotional one. Same thing with Staunton.

Coming late to this party--just saw "Julia" last night--I thought Bening was wonderful; far more than a broad comedic turn. I thought she conveyed the desperate narcissim of the character beautifully.
Haven't seen M$B yet, so I don't have an opinion there.
#16re: Being Julia
Posted: 3/6/05 at 5:18pmI saw it again last night, as well. She is amazing. The nuance, the tears, the actor getting caught acting, the joy of watching a great actress play a phenomenal role... When the movie was over, several audience members around me all said the same thing: "Why didn't she win?"
#17re: Being Julia
Posted: 3/6/05 at 9:15pmHoney stop beating a dead horse on the head. You said in a earlier post that most academy members must have not seen the movie. And I am telling you that is not the case. Most have. And a lot of us felt that as wonderful as she was she has already given that performance ( not only in film but very recently here in Los Angeles on Stage in Hedda). Glad you liked it. I did too. She didn't win. Get over it.

"Honey stop beating a dead horse on the head."
Yeah, I was responding to bta212. But since you brought it up... Swank is probably the least versatile actress to ever win two Oscars, let alone one. That's how I feel, sorry if you disagree. Please don't call me honey.
"She didn't win. Get over it."
I'm not going to dignify that with a response.

Dame...
I wish Annette had won myself, but I think this thread had better die....otherwise you may get yourself all worked up and miss 4:20.

Just for the record....
I'd rather the thread live on--I'm curious about people's comparative opinions of the two (Swank and Bening) performances.
Dame and BWay 86 just have to agree to disagree. (Or not--you are welcome to keep sniping; all the same to me.)
#22re: Being Julia
Posted: 3/7/05 at 4:20pmI won't say another word, except that we should just agree to disagree.
#23re: Being Julia
Posted: 3/7/05 at 4:32pmI will agree to that. The only thing I took exception to is broadway86's comment " I doubt that the majority of the Oscar voters actually saw it. If they had, things would have turned out differently. " That is just not true. Most people saw it. The studio was very aggresive with screenings and dvds sent to our homes. We simply disagreed with you as to who the oscar should go to. And as I said before I did think bening was terrific. just not oscar worthy. ( and we could go on and on in circles on this one)
