Bert and Maggie - 42nd St?

Are these two big characters? I know that they are basically sidekicks but whats there point in the show and how big of characters are they?

They are quite big parts, and provide alot of the comedy to the show. I think they are the producers of the show within a show but not too sure.

Yeah, their purpose in the show is very unclear, but I'm pretty sure they do a lot of comedy and get a musical number or two.
