"Tick, tick, tick"...I love it!
Besty, the "history lessons" are fascinating, thanks for keeping them coming.
Hmmmk...not WITHOUT cheating, who are the actresses to receive the most number of noms in each decade? Start with the 30s and you can end with the 90s...
And name the actress who has had noms in the MOST decades...
I don't know exactly what you're asking, dogs, but I'll take a stab at it.
1990s -- Susan Sarandon with 4, for THELMA & LOUISE (1991), LORENZO'S OIL (1992), THE CLIENT (1994), and DEAD MAN WALKING (1995).
ETA: I didn't cheat. That's the decade I started watching them.
Without cheating, I am pretty sure Meryl Streep is the actress with most nominations in the 80s (though the fact KRAMER v. KRAMER was released in '79 may be throwing me off). There's a chance Bette Davis is the one with nods in most decades along with Streep who has been nominated in the 70s, 80s, 90s, and now the 2000's.
It has to be Streep for the 80s, though I'm not sure about the earlier Oscar years, but at least in recent memory:
1981-FRENCH LIEUTENANT'S WOMAN
1982-SOPHIE'S CHOICE (Won)
1983-SILKWOOD
1985-OUT OF AFRICA
1987-IRONWEED
1988-A CRY IN THE DARK
That's six nominations in the same decade. Really in the 80s Streep must have been to every Academy ceremony either as a presenter or a nominee.
Okay, I'm not cheating, but I'll try:
1930s --- Bette Davis (if not her, then Katharine Hepburn)
1940s --- Greer Garson or Irene Dunne (or maybe Hepburn again?)
1950s --- Deborah Kerr or Thelma Ritter
1960s --- Elizabeth Taylor
1970s --- Jane Fonda
1980s --- Meryl Streep
1990s --- Meryl Streep
2000s --- Meryl Friggin' Streep
EDIT: forgot this one... Katharine Hepburn has the noms in the most decades.
SM2--Who got the most actress noms in the 30s-50s...and what actress has received noms in the most decades...
Bette has 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s
Keaton has 70s, 80s, 90, 00s
Jack (i know he's a man) has 60s-00s--which is the most I cuold find for anyone..so far
30s I think is Shearer or Dunne...
40s is Garson
I'd have to look up the rest--that's as far as I can go..lol
And Kate is right--30s,40s,50s,60s,80s
EDIT: 50s is Kerr

I would've said Jane Fonda for the 70s as well. If not... Glenda Jackson? I know she had like a whole bunch of nominations in the 70s including two wins. I am pretty certain there are a few more nominations in there.
C'mon, I cannot be the only Glenda Jackson fan around.
EDIT: There, not their.

I still think Helen Hunt winning is one of Oscars great mysteries.

^Only American nominated in the category that year against four Brits in two very British costume dramas, one arthouse film... and Titanic. Sadly Hollywood voted for one of their own in something they could comprehend.
Helen Hunt deserved the Oscar that year.
EDIT: I really have to wonder if the people saying she didn't even saw the movie.
Thanks, b12b. I'm so sick of people using the argument that Helen Hunt won because the others were British. It's the same thing that's been said about Tomei's win (even though Judy Davis is Australian). I've also heard one person say something about Hunt being a TV actress, as if that makes her less than worthy. Hunt gave a very good portrayal. How hard is that to comprehend?

I personally thought Judi Dench was the best that year in "Mrs Brown". Then again I do like my British custume pieces.

Hunt took an ordinary waitress and made her extraordinary. I think Judi Dench (who was her main competition that year) was equally good... BUT the degree of difficulty definitely goes to Hunt.
It's comparatively easy to make Queen Victoria extraordinary. She comes ready-made with a built in history, a built-in presence, built-in emotional reaction before she ever says a word, and a built in "command" of every scene she's in. Since both performances were great (yes, they were you bitches), the award rightfully went to Hunt that year.
EDIT: I will add that this is my own opinion, however it is the exact reasoning used by my Oscar-voting friends that year... all of whom voted for Hunt for the very reason I stated.
Personally, I didn't much care for MRS. BROWN as a movie, and Dench's Victoria was adequate. I didn't see what the big deal was about her performance. Billy Connolly, on the other hand, was the best thing in it (IMO), but he wasn't even nominated. Go figure!
I couldn't believe Billy Connolly wasn't nominated that year. It's as much his picture as it is hers. Makes no sense.
I agree about Connolly--and I'm with Urban--the first look on Dench's face as they're dressing her is worth the statue by itself--of course the REAL best actress of the year was Joan Allen in THE ICE STORM.
And the Best Picture.
But Helen was also in a hit film and a Best Pic nominee...that counts for alot (and yes, I know Kate was too!)
The Ice Storm?
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Helen Hunt deserved the Oscar that year.
Thank you! Everytime I watch that movie, I love her performance more and more. Every scene is just filled with specificity, heart, and radiance.
Through her body language alone, we can believe that Hunt - a very smart and elegant woman - is a love-starved, middle class waitress who can't spell "conscience". Carol's fierce love for her son, her generous spirit, as well as her constantly shifting feelings towards Melvin is handled perfectly.
Julie Christie will probably win this year.
But dammit, I want Ellen Page!

I'm right there with ya.
Well, to chime in on the Helen Hunt debate....I thought Julie Christie should have won that year! Yes, Hunt was good, and so was Dench, but did anyone see AFTERGLOW?? Christie was breathtaking in that. One of my all time favorites, and certainly one of the most powerful performances ever put on film in my book. But it was, as you said, an arthouse film, and that hurt her chances.
And so I'm glad she's the one tipped for the win this time. Not just because she deserves to win for AWAY FROM HER, but also because of this.
