Interesting list.
I agree with The Godfather I & II.
Best of Oscar Best
I could watch IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT for the rest of my life.
"They call me MR TIBBS!"
nitsua, I feel the same way about the first two Godfathers and All About Eve.
The two Godfathers definitely are two of the best films ever made, and I watch them whenever they're on tv. However, I also have a soft spot for Silence of the Lambs. To me it was outstanding in so many ways. Besides the performances of Hopkins and Foster, that of Ted Levine as Jaime Gumb is in my heart forever. Small role, but so strong.
"Goodbye Horses......"
Jane, I have seen the first two Godfathers countless times. I never miss them on tv either. They were recently on. I think on Bravo. In the 70's I went to a double feature of the Godfathers. I dreamed about organized crime all night.
I don't like their rankings at all.

Best, I'm glad American Beauty was so high on your list. For some reason, I thought you hated that movie.
Me? No.
I think American Beauty is our modern "Human Comedy" and "Human Tragedy" all in one film.
Am I the only one who has never seen GODFATHER: PART II? Saw the first one . . . liked it . . . didn't understand what all the hoopla was about . . . but still liked it . . . and never gotten around to seeing the second one.
The second one is better than the first.
I don't think I've seen any of them.
I've also never seen any of the Star Wars movies.
"I've also never seen any of the Star Wars movies."
And I worry about people who haven't seen Mrs. Miniver or All Quiet On the Western Front?
Good god man, get thee to Blockbuster!
Skip the new trilogy (for now, or altogether), and go back to the original.
I've never seen those either, besty **hides**
I will eventually check GODFATHER: PART II out
Ivan and I are watching a lot of TCM.
I've seen the original OF HUMAN BONDAGE, but is the remake any good?
If any of it plays on TCM, we'll record it.
It's amazing to me how a cultural phenomenon from one generation can go "unevenly noticed" in another, to "all but forgotten" by a third.
I've only seen each of the Godfathers once. I'm overdue for a revisit.
And, not a Best Picture, winner, but I watched NETWORK for the first time last week. Loved it. And it is scary that what was once meant as a satire has in many, many ways become reality.
True, Priest, but it had the "sting" of truth to it even back then.
nitsua---No the remake wasn't anywhere near as good as the original!
The Godfather movies are "grand opera." Everything is heightened. The sweeping saga, the acting, the violence, the music. I'm not into gangsters or gangster movies at all, but I enjoyed these because of the stylistic, artistic approach.
And for those of you interested in seeing just how popular some films were "back in their day," take a look at this Box Office list, adjusted for inflation. Everything is on a level playing field. This list does include all theatrical re-releases, which rarely happens anymore. But you can see just how "big" certain films were, at the time.

I haven't even seen the first one...
Best, thanks for the boxofficemojo link. I didn't know about that.
To all of those who haven't seen the first two Godfathers, you have to rent those movies.

I meant no Titanic on the linked list. Of course Besty had it on his because he knows what's good.

I prefer the second Godfather, too.
best12, many of those films were terrific. I only take issue with #68. I desperately wanted Goodfellas to win that year.
THE DEPARTED? SERIOUSLY?!!! I would actually put it as one of the worst.
