The audiences actually applauded after that "stained glass" sequence when the title card came on.
How often does a movie audience applaud at an opening sequence? And that happened 2 of the 3 times I saw the film in its initial release.

I always wanted a swimming pool.
Gah, I was gonna saw JAWS, too. It just puts you right there in scared off my ass mode.
For a horror movie, SCREAM had a pretty damn creepy beginning.
then again, the last time I saw it I was like...11.

I have two favorites.
The opening sequence to Goodfellas is genius. From the guys shooting up the body in the trunk, to Ray Liotta's unforgettable dry delivery of "As far back as I could remember, I always wanted to be a gangster!" Trunk slams shut, Tony Bennett's "Rags to Riches" plays. It was exhilarating!
My other favorite is The Sound of Music. It's just magic.

I don't know if they're the best, but definitely two of my favorites are the opening sequences to "All That Jazz" and "Love Actually."
The very opening of Braveheart with the fly over of Inverness, and the voice of Angus Mcfadyen (who played Robert the Bruce)

"Mary Poppins," as that Poppins woman floats on a cloud over London to the strains of the best overture ever.

I love Mary Poppins overture too, soooo good. Also, blueroses, that opening to Goodfellas is brilliant, I agree. I love that filme. I love the scene where they take DeVito (Joe Pesci) to be a made man, but intead blow his brains out. Brilliant.
I also like the opening to Chicago. The Music makes it for me.
In addition to pretty much every movie listed on this thread, the opening scene to Snake Eyes (a rather stupid movie) was brilliantly done. Same thing with Touch of Evil (great movie).
Oooooh, I can't possibly go through every movie I've ever seen to pick a few. I'm going to go with Phantom of the Opera. My breath actually caught in my chest as the chandelier rose and the music began. I love the visual effects as well.

as much as I hate the movie, My Best Friend's Wedding has a great opening

I agree with a lot said alread (POTO, SCREAM, SOUND OF MUSIC, ETC.), but I would also like to add HALLOWEEN to the mix.

I agree. And, it may be rather stupid, but I love the whole film. I only wish they had restored the edited tidal-wave sequence, for DVD release.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Snake Eyes. I also thought that Carla Gugino stole the show. De Palma's work can be inconsistent, but he NEVER bores me. I think that Sisters, The Untouchables, and Femme Fatale are his best.
A note to those who mentioned the Scream opening: I think it's awesome that one of Drew Barrymore's shortest performances also happens to be one of her best. She was riveting in those 15 minutes.
