and WHY do they feel it's ok to flick their butts on my lawn? I actually chased a guy down the street with a lit butt and yelled...'SCUSE ME, you forgot this!"

It is ridiculous to set a detective story in New York City. New York City is itself a detective story... AGATHA CHRISTIE, Life magazine, May 14, 1956

Well i know I can get everyone in this thread to join me in a petition to ban all gas-powered cars from driving in any public place. If you wanna pollute the air in your garage with deadly toxins, so be it, but don't do it on the streets that I have to walk beside.

Suzanne: I never use catalogs. I'd rather go in the store and see all the salespeople groveling and sucking up to you. Julia: Pardon me, I never knew they were so solicitous at the K-Mart.

Personally, I follow a few rules when it comes to smoking:
- always outside, and that means not in the car
- try to direct the smoke away from other people
- put the butts in an appropriate spot (which is not always a garbage, as that could cause a fire)

As long as they are doing those things, they're being quite polite about their habit. Honestly, if it's outside, deal with it. Or at least ask them not to smoke POLITELY.

I really don't understand the whole notion that just because a person smokes, you can treat them like dirt. Smoking doesn't make you a bad person - just an unhealthy one.

Brava forni-kate! I follow the same rules you do. Some of us dapple in a ciggy here and there (which, last I checked was perfectly allowed in designated areas?) and do so with repsect to our neighbors' concerns. Updated On: 9/1/06 at 03:13 PM

Walking down the street with smoke going into the faces of those behind or next to you is not respecting those of us who are in your path. We can't just cross the street to avoid you if we live in a city. Why do you need to smoke and walk? Go stand in the corner in a designated area and smoke all you want but leave the rest of us alone.

lock yourself in your apartment, seal the doors and windows, install a sealed filter recycling ventilation system, never ever leave. and please try to take my marlboro from me on the street, please. then you'll be able to offer your opinion on which is worse, second hand smoke or burning embers applied directly to your eye.
