if there is no way to get out of talking to a person who is smoking a ciggy at the moment, what do you do to avoid cancering up your lungs?
I try to breathe as little as possible. That or I take out my inhalor and fake an asthma attack. It would probobly just be easier to politley ask them not to, but I never really thought of that.

I guess you could stand off to the side and talk to them and just move if the wind blows the smoke your way, but that just seems somewhat rude.

There is no escaping them. They walk in front of you on crowded city streets while their smoke blows into your face. If you are able to cross the street, you will only run into the same thing. There is no escape until it is banned from all public places.

Put a plastic bag over their head.
Take the "ciggy" out of their mouth, burn them with it, punch them in the head (leaving them passed out on the ground), put the "ciggy" out if still burning, and enjoy the fresh air.
Turn around to breath and then look at him/her again.

Yeah, like breathing over your shoulder while swimming.
I can see the problem if you are confined inside and people are smoking....but outside? Puhlease. Lighten up a bit.
If you're in the city, you'll have to deal with it. But if you're with another person in a home, just ask politely.
I have severe asthma which is triggered by many things, one of which is smoke. I simply ask them not to smoke or I stand about 6 feet away from them upwind. If they won't respect my health then I will get far away from them enough so that I can breathe. In the city I just hold my breath when I have to walk through a smokey area.
SARS mask? I try to just keep my distance. The worst is when people don't ask if it is okay to smoke in your car.
well, cruel, what I like to do is take the persons cigarette and put it out on their forehead. They rarely smoke around me again.
Holly, I had a mechanic smoke in my car when he test drove it to make sure the breaks worked after repairing them. I got in my car and about 2 minutes later I could bearly breathe. I had to pull over and let the car air out before I could get back in. After I got my breathe back I called them and let them have it. It was awful.
Ick! When I bought my car, the previous owner was a smoker. It took forever to get the stink out. (PS Vanilla worked.)
Vanilla is great! Put a few drops on a cotton ball and put it in your fridge (or other stinky place) and the smell will go away.

"Best Ways To Avoid Second-Hand Smoke?"
Take up smoking and avoid the middle-man.

I find stabbing the person forcing the smoke upon you is a good solution.
...or...you could politely inform them that smoke bothers you and if they are anyone worth talking to, they will do something to remedy the situation.

A passive-aggressive fake asthma attack is the way to go.

I generally (and genuinely) start sneezing. If the smoker makes no effort to redirect the smoke, I make no effort to redirect the boogers.
Stop breathing.

I'm going to order these little postcards and hand them out to every single smoking person I pass on the street.
*snark*
When I lived in San Francisco, there were for some reason TONS of smokers in my neighborhood, several of whom lived in my building, and a large number of them smoked CIGARS on the street.
Every now and then, I would stick a can of Lysol in my bag, and if I ran into one on the street, I would spray it at them.
There is NO need to spread that vile poison on the street.
My little sister started coughing really loud, when a guy was smoking next to her.

Why do smokers feel that they have the right to drop their cig butts all over on the street? It's against the law to litter so how do they get away with it? It's disgusting to see those things all over the sidewalk.
