Worst would easily be I Heard the Owl Call My Name by Margaret Craven.
My personal favorite required book, both to teach and to read (although it wasn't required reading until after I graduated) is John Gardner's Grendel.

I LOVED The Grapes of Wrath. Couldn't get into Old Man and the Sea or The Prince or The Stranger---Camus depressed me. I might like those 3 better now.

Oh I LOVED The Stranger! Generally not a big Camus fan either, but that one struck a cord.

I think I was a bit too religious at the time. I couldn't imagine living life as an atheist.

The Stranger is not an easy read by any means (I had to read it several times to truly appreciate it, but it can be very rewarding.

We're reading Slaughterhouse Five right now...pure brilliance.

Aww, what was wrong with The Giver? I remember reading that in school around the same time the movie "North" came out and Elijah Wood said he would've loved to do a film adaptation of it. I fell in love with him that day.

Eww Catcher in the Rye. One of the most overrated books ever.
I've never been so annoyed by a fictional character in my life.

Best: Pride and Prejudice
Worst: The Giver
I didn't like The Giver because of the hopelessness at the end. I don't need a fairytale happy ending, but I do like to be hope for a better future for these characters.

Indeed, it was. Great story, though.
I loved Catcher in the Rye. I strongly disliked the character of Holden, but I was also fascinated by him.

i didnt like the giver b/c i thought it was, well, boring. we got to read the westing game in 5th grade. we had little groups where we would try to figure out the mystery and we had paper where we wrote down stuff about characters. we did all these games to finally solve it. it didnt even feel like school, it was really fun!
