re: Best/Worst Book You Had To Read For School?

I loved most of the Lit. I read in high school - too much to remember. I was fortunate enough to be challenged to read some really compelling stuff in elementary school as well - Pilgrim's Progress, The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom (if you've never read it, put it on your life's to-do list).

I, like so many others, hated Lord of the Flies and The Scarlet Letter. Then, I get to college and have to live through a terrible production of the Scarlet Letter, where the director decided that every scene with the minister and the doctor needed to be laced with homoerotic undertones, and where a conceptual set designer represented the forest with GIANT BLACK HANGING POOL NOODLES. Now I *really* hate the book.

True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle had no point whatsoever. Ick.

The best book has got to be Fahrenheit 451. Ray Bradbury definitely knew what he was talking about when he wrote that book. I found the really old movie of it hysterical.
-Was that a fart?
-My fault, I fear.

Best: Siddhartha, A Tale of Two Cities, 1984, Animal Farm (I know there are more...)

Worst: Great Expectations. I respect the book as the classic that it is, but I simply wasn't very intrigued by it, at least not as intrigued as I was by A Tale of Two Cities. Ahh, Dickens.
Honey, I don't produce theater. I am theater.

To Kill a Mockingbird was my absolute favorite.

The Scarlet Letter was absolute torture.
