Posted: 6/2/06 at 2:06pmwell if he did or not, Kerry was never FOR gay marriage. At least not publicly, which is where it counts.

Chita, I think DOMA was truly thought of as a measure to put a lid on all of this clamor. There is no threat to heterosexual marriage. It's completely imagined. At the very least, Republicans COULD argue that the immigrant situation offers real, physical threats. Thing is, it's too hot button an issue, dividing their own constituents. Gay marriage, though, is one thing that bonds those right-wing, bible-thumping hardcore voters who will fly to the polls once pamphlets start dropping into their mailboxes again, featuring articles on how Democrats want to ban the Bible, or showing men proposing to men and ascribing hatred to it.
And thus comes the FMA again.

I don't think DOMA caused this climate. I think it's a result of the growing climate. The 90s were very gay and thus a backlash began and has swelled in this new decade.
While I despise Democrats for being cowards and adopting stances against gay marriage, I do support the fact that
--the Dems have many pro gay stances, where the GOPs rarely do.
--I don't believe that Kerry or any of the others would have ever pursued antigay laws. In fact, I think they wouldn't have halted progress at all. And THAT is the reality I can accept.
Advocating and fighting for anti-gay laws offends me much more than a President who made compromises to prevent harsher laws or wimpy politicians who are too scared to say, "I support gay marriage".

No, he wasn't, Chita, and that's why this amendment frightens me. A lot of Democrats really aren't our friends on this issue as much as we'd like to think, and while they'll pay lip service, they'd happily toss us aside if they thought it was politically expedient.
Like Hillary Clinton. Sorry. She'd vote for an amendment in a second if she thought it would help her become president.

"nice generalization there, zoney"
Well, papa, when the republican party finally stops hating blacks, and jews, and fags, and the poor, and mexicans, and every other minority and foreign country, maybe you won't be a despicable piece of trash for supporting them.
and for a party that sells itself as the party of moral superiority and religious adherence, they certainly hate a lot of ****ing people. Whatever happened to hate the sin but love the sinner? Oh wait, I forgot, you people think being a black is a sin.

Kerry publicly stated he was not in favor of gay marriage. I know and you know that he was, but it doesn't matter when his campaign was pandering to those bigots.

Posted: 6/2/06 at 2:11pmI'd like to see a bill that outlaws all marriage. And, another that allows civil unions, for anyone who wants one. Leave marriage to the various religions.

can you all call your senators and demand the ammendment be ammended to state that marriage is sacred and holy and can NEVER be dissolve, annulled or ended by divorce? How many of the people in your southern red states would be in favor of not being able to get divorced? I read it leads the US in divorce and incest. Do nasty things, just don't talk about them and go tell Jesus how wonderful you are. F*ck all the "Christian-INOs"

#36bigot bush is at it again on gay marriage!
Posted: 6/2/06 at 2:21pmI don't disagree. But I voted for Clinton, and I'll probably vote for Hillary if she's the choice come 2008. For now, I'd rather have lip service and the chance of being stabbed in the back over some who has never said the word "gay" publicly (has he?) and would stab with a smirk.

sorry, zoney. life isn't black and white.

Posted: 6/2/06 at 2:32pmIt's not about demonizing people who disagree with me, it's about demonizing people who think I'm someone dirty, or wrong for being gay. I am looked down upon and used as bait to rile up the hateful masses to keep ignorance and bigotry in power. I am hated for something I didn't choose. You howerver choose to be a bigot and to support people who are bigots and racists. I demonize people who make choices of hate, hate for things that are not chosen, such as race, and sexuality.

"you're either with us or you're against us, erik?"
and the stupidity continues. It's not about with us or against us. it's about not suporting people who hate us and want to see us dead. Yet you continue to support these people. You claim you don't support their ideas, and that their thoughts are wrong. But yet, you claim it's sound politcal stragety, and they are just doing what they need to get elected, and somehow that makes it ok.
Saying you don't support their claims is cheap, and easy. It doesn't cost you anything. You won't take the step however that isn't cheap, actually doing something about it.

When you pull a lever, you vote for 100% of what a politician stands for, regardless of whether or not you ACTUALLY do. You don't get to say, "I vote for you, GWB, but only 90%." A vote for someone says, "pursue your full agenda. I'm with you."

no. i'm not a bigot. i disagree with the party on this issue. find anybody here who knows me and supports that i'm a bigot. you want everyone to be a single issue voter and those who are not are bigots? i agree with the gop on more than i disagree, just as i disagree with the democrats on more than i agree. i understand the anger with which many see such politics, but wonder if the angry understand.

The real issue that this boils down to, Papa and Zone, is really that, for now, no gay person can really afford to be anything BUT a single-issue voter. I wish I didn't have to be. However, the only real power I have to wield with my one vote is to say NO to anything and anyone who is trying to enact this legislation. It's hurtful, it's wrong, and I could agree with every other single thing on the Republican party platform but I would be ethically bound to vote against them until this kind of mandate is removed from the party's makeup.

I talk about Clinton because a lot of you are excusing his behaviour while attacking Bush for the same. I know an act is not an amendment but both send the message to those who don't know the distinction, that gays are lesser than.
edit: if you're a single issue voter than how do you vote when both candidates are against gay marriage?
edit: "One is an essentially worthless but potentially dangerous piece of legislation that is sort of the documented statement of what marriage is."
