Dreamgirls wasn't eligible for that list, right?
Considering Hudson shared the Breakthrough Female award, it must have been eligible.

Blood Diamond was *completely* predictable, in a screenwriting 101 way (and now he's going to-, this is gonna be the part where she-, oh and then next-, *nothing* that happened on screen was a surprise), and yet I found that I actually enjoyed it. Yes it had its Very Important Message (spoiler: blood diamonds = bad), yet it didn't wallow in the schmaltz the way that Babel did (yes I have to mention again how. much. I hated Babel), and I didn't need those two hours of my life back after it was finished.
Not the best movie of the year- it's no Little Miss Sunshine or Shut Up and Sing or anything- and yes there are cliches and plotholes, yet as a whole overall it was good. Not excellent, but good.

You thought BABEL sucked? Are you joking?
I saw BLOOD DIAMOND this evening, and I thought it was absolutely beautiful. Yes, a bit formulaic, but beautifully done and brilliantly acted by all 3 leading players. The ending was a bit sappy, but it was a job well done.
It's not the best picture of the year, but it would probably make my top 10 list.

Oh yes, I hated BABEL. Actually, hated is the wrong word there- I didn't care enough about it to work up to a feeling of hate.
I thought the idea of it was brilliant, and the directing was pretty beautiful, but the execution of it was so flawed, I was so not into the story at all that by the end I felt no sympathy for pretty much all of the characters, and I left the theatre with a shrug and a wish to get those two hours of my life back. So the world's full of people behaving badly connected by their regrettable behaviour- so then what?
My co-worker (who actually did *hate* BABEL) brilliantly summed up my feelings on it: it's this year's CRASH, where you know it's a Very Important Movie because it just keeps f'n telling you how oh so Very Important it is.
But then again, I am not a Top 10 movies of the year voter, so what do I know?

NOTES ON A SCANDAL is getting some very good preview press, and Judi Dench (surely no slouch) is being cited for a "career-high" performance in it.
Frankly, considering how many Important Oscar-Baiting pictures have already crashed this year, I would have no problem backing THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA as Best Picture. Apart from the dull Adrien Grenier scenes, it accomplished exactly what it intended with wit, flair, and perfectly pitched performances. Can we stop pretending it's easier to get laughs than tears onscreen, please? (Was GANDHI really a better movie than TOOTSIE, i.e., would you watch it more than once?) Or at least divide the Oscars into Best Drama and Best Musical or Comedy the way the Golden Globes do? (Then DREAMGIRLS would be a total lock!)

I loved The Devil Wears Prada.
But I didn't like how they changed the boyfriend character, although Grenier's very nice to look at.

DiCaprio's accent in Blood Diamond is actually close to perfect.
The accent that made me giggle was the Boston accent used by most of the cast of The Departed. Something about Martin Sheen calling someone a "cawk suckah" just cracks me up.

I highly enjoyed it.
A bit too long, but it kept me interested.
Djimoun Honsou is fantastic, as is Leo.
That's all.
The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

Wow--munk and I agree! This is wilder than that time Mister Matt and his mom both liked the same movie!
I thought it was absolutely terrific. Yes, could have easily edited Jennifer out of the movie and it would have been better, but that's true of every film she makes.
Acting was great, well shot and edited, great pacing...def in my top five.

Blood Diamond was fun to watch while on the Amtrak to NYC, but I wouldnt rush out to buy the DVD.
And Devil Wears Prada crapped out in the end. Had some real possibilities and blew them all off. Ugh.

Posted: 5/31/07 at 6:48pmI thought BLOOD DIAMOND was a pretty neat film but it's one of those movies that take about 30 minutes to actually finish. I think the film could've done without Jennifer Connelly, but Djimon Hounsou gave one of the best performances of '06 films.
