Yet another high profile Oscar hopeful that isn't getting the kind of reviews one expected (or needed to get a nom). At this rate Borat is a shoe in for a nomination for Best Picture.
What a crappy season this is turning out to be.
Dreamgirls and The Queen and Miss Sunshine will benefit from this, too.
was it just me that looked at the previews for this and thought, "god, what an unholy abysmal mess?"

You're not alone, papa. Every time I've seen a preview, I've just wanted to fall asleep.
And let's get to the truly important part: am I the only one who hates the layers in Jennifer Connelly's hair?
I have no desire to see BLOOD DIAMOND.
Let's not despair yet...several "good" movies are yet to open.
Such as what, Munk? I think they are all pretty much screened for critics. Isn't Dreamgirls the last big one?
LETTERS FROM IWO JIMA
NOTES ON A SCANDAL
THE GOOD GERMAN
THE PAINTED VEIL
The National Board of Revew just named their 10 best films of the year:
"Letters From Iwo Jima"
"Babel"
"Blood Diamond"
"The Departed"
"The Devil Wears Prada"
"Flags Of Our Fathers"
"The History Boys"
"Little Miss Sunshine"
"Notes on a Scandal"
"The Painted Veil"
This has been the leanest year...maybe of my own history. Oy! I wonder if anyone will look back and give MANDERLAY another chance.
Painted Veil and Good German look pretty good, but the Iwo Jima release reeks of desperation. I love Judy Dench, but the previews for Scandal make it look like a lesbian version of Fatal Attraction.
Judi Dench is in a lesbian film??
Sad but true: Last year's films were quite good and box office was way down, this year has sucked donkey and...you guessed it...reciepts are back up. What a world!

I would go gay for Judi Dench!

"The Devil Wears Prada"? Really? I mean, it was enjoyable enough, but the best of the year?
Leo's accent makes me giggle.
Leo's fake accent in Blood Diamond already annoyed me just from the previews, let alone 1 1/2 - 2 hours worth.

I thought the same thing, Tink.
I agree, Calvin. "Devil Wears Prada" was good, but not THAT good.

To me DeCaprio is starting to look like Brando in his Elvis years.
He needs to take care of that luggage he's carrying around under his eyes.
Whatever. Robin Williams won an Oscar using the worst Boston accent ever.

He won FOR the accent? or WITH the accent...
"Ed Zwick has a specialty, and that specialty is telling stories about the minority experience through the eyes of the white man. Zwick is drawn to other cultures, and how white people have helped them. Through Zwick we have learned how Matthew Broderick freed Denzel Washington in Glory and how Tom Cruise defended ancient Japanese tradition in The Last Samurai. One time he broke the mold and showed how Denzel Washington saved the Arabs in The Siege. Now Zwick has turned his attention to the brutal aspects of the African diamond trade, and how a white man can save all the black people."
Thank God For White People
BABEL made the National Board of Review's top 10 list? Ugh! Talk about wanting to get those two hours of my life and my money back (and I saw it at a free screening!)
I'm going to see BLOOD DIAMOND tonight, totally excited for it! Will let you know if it's bloody bad. :)

Dreamgirls wasn't eligible for that list, right?
