You could get on some antibiotics. Doesn't have to be anything extreme. I'm on some mild antifungal (LOVELY!) right now, but that's enough to prevent me from donating. Or if you don't drink enough fluids, they won't be able to find your vein, and they can't take your blood if they can't find it.

I lied to get on the bone marrow registry.

If I ever match someone who needs a bone marrow transplant -- and it's really hard to make a bone marrow match outside of the family -- do you really think they'd throw out that person's only hope because they're gay?

I ask that in earnest, because I really don't know the answer.

I'm totally confused. I donated blood in April before I first had sexual relations with a guy. Now that I have, I cannot donate blood anymore? I'm type 0+, the universal donor, they need people like me!

If I had a sex change, could I donate after a year of no sex with any men who've had sex with other men?

Wait...if you're gay you can't be an organ donor? As I understand it, organs need to be harvested almost immediately after death. How would the hospital know if the man that had just passed, whose driver's license indicated he would be an organ donor, was gay or not?

I was hoping people would have the sense to realize the entire policy was a problem, but apparently the myth of Hydra was lost on you.

There are a lot people from Africa who have immigrated to the US, and even more whose parents are from those countries. I went to high school with about 50 who protested at our school's first (and only) blood drive for this same reason. The one out gay student protested as well, but he was in the vast minority of the disenfranchised. You know, everyone working together to combat a problem. Believe it or not, gay men aren't the only people screwed over in the world for arbitrary reasons. Ignoring that is discrimination in itself.

I wish other groups got followed around as much as gay men do with people saying, "It doesn't just affect you."

I do realize the entire policy was a problem and yes, I missed the myth of Hydra.

Perhaps it was the tone of your comment that irked me, especially the "Is anyone going to make posters for all the discriminated groups?"

But whatever, as long as Charlize can give blood, I'm good.

What about webcams or phone sex? That's commercial sex work, and there's no contact involved.

I'd be very interested in hearing from the poster that PalJoey referenced, with regards to organ donation differing from blood donation, but I don't expect a reply unless it's that poster's choice to offer one. Just... registering my wish, and my acceptance of it probably never coming to fruition.

My church has blood drives several times a year. Often, volunteers are stationed in the church vestibule to sign up donors. As I was leaving mass some time ago, one volunteer blurted out that I should sign up to donate blood. I responded firmly and without rancor that I was gay and that the Red Cross doesn't want my blood. People stopped in their tracks. Some thought I was joking, some were outraged that such a policy exists, others couldn't believe my frankness.

The church looked into the Red Cross' policy and found it to be true. At first the pastor considered ending the blood drives, but when I found out, I advised against that. Heck, blood is NEEDED. For the time being, we still have the blood drives in my parish but volunteers no longer cajole people to sign up; they just sit in the vestibule with pencils ready.

The parish council is looking into what can be done about the Red Cross' policy. We're even considering a Diocese-wide protest about the matter. We'll know more in the fall.

The policy was recently revisited and upheld. I don't think a Diocese-wide protest will help. Isn't that Red Cross policy in tune with Catholocism's? "As long as you don't have sex, you're fine."

The upper realms of the Church may hold that view, but on the parish level we're finding that the feelings are quite different. In our little church more and more gays are openly becoming involved in various ministries and the 11 AM mass on Sundays has a gay couple serving as ushers. There's a lesbian couple who are very active in the St. Vincent de Paul Society. The rest of the parish is very supportive of the gay population.

Yes, we're CATHOLIC!

Yup. I love my parish. It all stems from our pastor.

When he got here one of the first things he did was take down the copy of da Vinci's "Last Supper" and replace it with a version that included men, women, children and even dogs scampering about the table. He then made a public statement that everyone is invited to the Lord's Table in our parish. He went on to include married couples, single parents, divorcees, gays, straights and their relatives.

When I ran for Parish Council, I stated that I was openly gay and still managed to garner the largest number of votes.

I love your parish too, Dollypop. Sounds like a proper new testament "love everyone" kinda Christianity, none of this "well the old testament says that menstruating is a sin, so I'd better go sacrifice some lambs" malarkey. :3

I don't think it's reasonable to expect people who are discriminated against not to mention the fact in public.
