I don't follow many TV shows, but I'll watch this one out of spite because the dreadful AFA is so ruffled about it.

Gasp! A gay man has the nerve to write about religion? For shame.

Posted: 12/28/05 at 1:39pmIt looks good to me. Also, some really good actors in the cast. Finally, John Driscoll (who plays Coop on GUIDING LIGHT), is in it!

And Ellen Burstyn!
I have to admit, though, I didn't know Phyllis Diller was still alive.

Posted: 12/28/05 at 2:13pmI'm excited to see this as well. Although, the theologian geek in me got all excited that this thread would be a discussion of the symbolic nature of the Babylonian captivity or the literal/figurative split of Daniel's dreams.

Well, we could discuss that. But despite my year of Old Testament classes in college, about all I can remember about the actual Book of Daniel is that Sunday school song we used to sing:
Daniel, Daniel, Daniel, Daniel, Daniel in the li li li li
Daniel, Daniel, Daniel, Daniel, Daniel in the li li li li
Daniel, Daniel, Daniel, Daniel, Daniel in the li li li li
Daniel in the lion's den.

See, I got a heads start on you, Calvin. I went to Christian high school, and THEN took more than my fair share of biblical studies classes in college.
Nonetheless, I still sing that song when I'm trying to remember someone who was just introduced to me as Daniel. I also imagine THEM singing it, so I can associate it correctly. It rarely works.
So far, the only sure-fire bet is when someone's name is John.

Posted: 12/28/05 at 2:35pmwhat song do you sing for Noah? Or do you just imagine them kissing Noah Wyle?

Well, I was going to start singing "Who built the ark? Noah, Noah" -- but I think your other option might be much more memorable.

Posted: 12/28/05 at 2:44pmOoo...you know, there is a link to the AFA website (where you can send an email to the heads of NBC). You can change what gets sent, so I felt free to change quite a bit in there. It vaguely resembles the nasty trash they ask their members to send. I asked them to audition me for a part on the show. I also mentioned I was okay with nudity.

unless they've seriously changed up the pilot from the version I saw a few months back I was planning on not watching this show just because it's really, really really bad. Oh so bad.
But now I too feel like I should watch it out of spite because the AFA is telling me not to.
re: Book of Daniel#14
Posted: 12/28/05 at 4:42pmI am excited for this show. it looks very original, and finally, something risky for television that will stir some good controversy.
re: Book of Daniel#15
Posted: 12/28/05 at 5:32pmI've seen the pilot and been to two discussions of the series at All Saints Church, Pasadena. This is quite an amazing show, and comes at just the right time, when perhaps more of America is willing to turn away from the dogmatism of the "Christian" right and begin to see the world in a more liberal truly Christian manner. The Book of Daniel will irritate many but fascinate and inspire many more. Lots of water-cooler chats about this show, I promise you.

Posted: 12/28/05 at 7:07pmI'm very excited about the show. It just looks like good ole campy fun to me.
re: Book of Daniel#18
Posted: 12/28/05 at 9:00pmThere was no q&a when I saw it- I loved the premise of the show (it was like the anti-7th Heaven or something), but I just remember that the group I saw it with got caught up and distracted by (no spoilers) things like the part where it was a school night, and yet Saturday night, both in the same scene, 'minor' stuff like that. And when the pilot audience is discussing the bloopers (plot holes?) instead of the pilot itself it's not usually a good thing. But this was quite a few months ago, hopefully stuff got reworked and improved.

So, one local station decided not a air it! What great publicity for the show!
no airing

I love how the backlash is such great free publicity for this show, it si true that I was not going to watch it until I heard the AFA was opposed to it, then it made my list.
Touchme, I have one up on you. I am IN seminary right now.
I have no "conservative church" scholing though, the Southern Baptist church I grew up in does not think we should "learn" just "sit and be brainwashed."

I dunno, smartie. I DID manage to fit in a semester of seminary while I was the music pastor at a small Southern Baptist church, so I think that still puts me ahead of you.
Wow. Are we really competing to see who was fu^@ed up the most?

Touchme, thank GOD by college my Southern Baptist days were behind me.
Sounds like you win the sweepstakes, but I am in the middle of my second year here in Liberal Seminary. And of course we are trying to prove who is screwed up the worst, it is all the church really left us with.
All of which sounds like it will be in this show, which makes it intriguing.

i add this link to the san francisco chronicle's review of the book of daniel not for any real value of the review, but simply because the repeated references to the character of jesus made me giggle.
