I was never a Boy Scout, but I had friends who were, and I don't remember them talking about stuff like this:
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/14/us/14explorers.html?_r=2&hp
Cathy Noriego, also 16, said she was attracted by the guns..."I like shooting them," Cathy said. "I like the sound they make. It gets me excited."
Something about this statement makes me think this isn't such a great idea.
I don't know how to react to this.
One side of me says that the training could be a good thing. Like the kid who says he wants to be a lawyer and this is helping him not only learn discipline but learn about law.
But on the other hand we're teaching kids how to use guns in a world where violence in the schools is a very real thing.
I can't see any good to this. There are a lot of constructive ways to learn about discipline and law, or anything for that matter without involving guns.
That said, at least we'd be even if we ever go to war with the warlords in Africa or Islamic militants.
I think there are better ways for kids who want to be lawyers to learn about discipline and the law.
looks like a good program to give needed structure and incentive to some kids.
yer all a buncha pussies.
I love this:
"?My uncle was a sheriff?s deputy,? said Alexandra Sanchez, 17, who joined the Explorers when she was 13. Alexandra?s police uniform was baggy on her lithe frame, her airsoft gun slung carefully to the side. She wants to be a coroner.
?I like the idea of having law enforcement work with medicine,? she said. ?This is a great program for me.?
And then she was off to another bus hijacking."
A demonstrably homophobic organization arming adolscents?
I couldn't be happier.

Lovely. Good thing I got my son out when he was still a Cub Scout.
Phyllis, I think you need to smack the side of your Tone-A-Tron.
"This is about being a true-blooded American guy and girl," said A. J. Lowenthal, a sheriff?s deputy here in Imperial County
You'd think Imperial County was in Texas.
kids should learn about guns from their friends like sex.
"kids should learn about guns from their friends like sex."
Papa, if you're going to quote Sarah Palin, you should attribute it.
Oh, I thought that was a Pelosi quote, madbrian.
Perhaps I'm mistaken...it could have been Cheney.
yea, it sounds Cheney-esque.
Well, seriously.
"If you play with it long enough, it's bound to go off in your hand."
Are we done?

This might be the first step in allowing gays to participate.
As targets, of course.
Anyone see the movie BETRAYED, with Tom Berringer and Debra Winger?
