"does this new policy also extend to the Girl Scouts organization?"

As I remember, it isn't an issue because the Girl Scouts organization doesn't discriminate against gays.

Will the Boy Scouts issue little LOGAN'S RUN hand lights that flash red when the boys turn 18?

The most efficient weapon is time. Unfortunately it requires patience for the intolerant older generation to die.

There are way too many intolerant members of the younger generation to make that weapon as efficient as it really needs to be.

I was a scout up until two years ago and I didn't even know gay boys were banned. One of my best friends is openly gay and has been an active member for many years and is currently a leader.

seems to me no one has addressed the heart of the issue, which is the following.

unfortunately, the scouts are an explicitly christian organization, or, at the very least, funded by religious organizations, specifically, christianity, and its bastard child, mormonism.

imho, the approach would be, if they continue with this ridiculous behavior, cite the first amendment (congress shall make no law regarding the establishment of religion) and strip them of their special protections (title 36, etc., etc.). then they could truly be private, and can be as bigoted as they want. without these special entitlements, however, competing groups would be able to rise up.

the ONLY reason people want to be a part of this ridiculous organization is because it is the only one of its kind because of these protections (no other organization is allowed to use the word scout!!!). but it must be stated that they do not have a monopoly of how to "make boys into men," any more than religion has a monopoly on love, kindness, and compassion. they don't OWN these things. they are our common property. in fact, any organization that LIES to children (particularly about their sexuality and where it comes from) is not a moral one, it is IMMORAL. and a lie of omission (simply by not talking about it) is still a lie.

The Scouts focus on Gay Scouts- with NO mention of "gay behavior."

Because there is more man-on-man action in BSA tents than any gay bath house I've ever seen.

There's something very homoerotic about BSA.

Just being devil's advocate - you're what, six when you join the scouts? Are most children, gay or straight, expressing their sexuality at that age?

I know you. I know you. I know you.

The Mormon and Catholic churches account for about 1/3 of the total BSA membership. This was about appeasing the 60% of troops who want full inclusion while trying not to alienate such a large base of their membership in these two churches. (Most growth in scouting has come from the LDS whereas the declines have occurred in troops sponsored by other churches.) The LDS church has officially supported this new policy. I think the Catholic church will as well. Both think sex before marriage is a sin so as long as boys aren't having sex outside of a straight marriage they'll see it as a non-issue. Of course, the irony is that boys straight or gay in troops of these denominations ARE having sex. And I bet they won't hesitate to kick them out if they do express their sexuality with another boy.

Also, the Boy Scouts use the term "same-sex attraction" in all of their materials when referring to ay scouts. This is the same language the Catholic church and LDS church use. They believe it to be a preference as opposed to an inborn trait.

I was recently happy to learn that 4-H doesn't discriminate on the basis of gender identity or sexual orientation. I have a friend who works for them who is currently engaged to her transgendered fiance. She was open about this when she was hired.

*EDIT* The Catholic church teaches it is an unchangeable trait, but that acting on it is "intrinsically disordered" and "an act of grave depravity".

^ That's what I never understood from the catholic cathechism. They understand gay people are born gay, but condemn those who act upon it. If you're born like that, isn't that how God made you, why would he want you to go against it or feel ashamed about it?

Harvey Fierstein wrote a very interesting essay on the matter.

I wholeheartedly agree with him.
