BTW - I loved the photo, and my only thought was "what an adorable family".

YWIW, me too; I was just making a silly joke.

They look like a lovely family having a lot of fun.

Reg, my comment was directed to the early part of the thread. I was just late to the party!

Oh, I didn't think you meant me. I just realized I hadn't expressed an actual opinion.

I'm wondering which of the dissenters puts their doggy or kitty in a silly outfit and takes picutres with them wearing a similar one.

I just hope that soon they'll let their son choose his own costume, as he seems kind of miserable. Otherwise it's cute. My facebook is already crammed with people's pics of their kid's in costume for halloween. Who cares?

Block whoever has kids/pets if you don't want to see them dressed up.

And Robbie, in all due respect (uh-oh, here it comes)...I don't find that picture "heteronormative" for the very simple reason that it has two dads. Thereby I should think it would automatically "homonormative." Or perhaps just plain "normative."

(For the record, I HATE the phrase "heteronormative." Almost as much as I hate the phrase "straight-acting." They are both odious locutions.)

Plus, the two dads are dressed up in pretty fanciful costumes. I don't believe that parents dressing up is "normative" at all. (And can't we just say "normal," like, well, NORMAL people?)

So if it's not "hetero" and it's not normal, it's not "heteronormative." (Have I said how much I hate that word?)

PLUS, the in third picture, David Burtka is showing enough skin as Peter Pan to be neither "heteronormative" or "homonormative" but downright "homoerotic." (Well, at least, if you're the type who finds boys-who-never-grow-up-and-are-usually-played-by-middle-aged-women-or-depicted-as-sexless-cartoon-figures erotic.)

So, is what you're objecting to that they are celebrating Halloween? Because that's normative? (NORMAL!) Are same-sex-parented families supposed to eschew all of the activities that opposite-sex-parented families do for fun? Simply out of some requirement that they not validate or propagate someone else's definition of what "normative" is? (NORMAL!)

Oh lord. Another Pal Joey take-down (said with deep love, of course).

I'm fine with you disagreeing. I'm fine with you hating the word heteronormative. Whatevs.

But isn't it just possible that where some people are in life can cause an emotional reaction to something? Something that clearly wasn't intended?

Let's, for instance, say a person fields the comment, 'I hope you're moving on with your life' often enough to become exasperated by it. That person can have had the most creative year of their life, as well as travel and expand their group of friends and generally stand on their own two feet and feel life...but the implication is, if they don't have someone by their side, they haven't moved on. Maybe the 'normal' state of walking two-by-two is something a person might bristle against based on certain life experiences. Perhaps walking solo for a while is a really great thing to experience. And sometimes, when an innocuous picture pops up, it brings about an emotional reaction.

My reaction is my own. I'm not trying to convince anyone of anything. It's my own issue to deal with in whatever way I see fit. But, I would greatly appreciate it if people were simply allowed to have their own, personal reaction to something instead of deciding it needs to be addressed.

Yes...I realize this post has jumped over the line to TMI. But before anyone decides to dismiss something, perhaps, just perhaps, they can take a moment and realize that somebody else's journey may simply lead to a different reaction.

All of this is just another way of saying, 'Right bitch. Wrong day.'

Some people (gay/straight/bi) love Halloween and dress up.

Some people (gay/straight/bi) do not.

Live and let live, I say.

I get what Robbie is saying and I know (and have dated) many who feel the same. I just bristle myself a bit when I hear the "heteronormative" word and its sentiment tossed around in a derogatory way as if being gay means you should not "conform" to conventional relationships. Like we have a responsibility to NOT get married or be in monogamous relationships. I've seen numerous gay men get angry about same-sex marriage and this weird reverse discrimination against gays who wish to get married or be monogamous. It's really bizarre. If you don't want to do it, then just don't do it. My desire to marry my partner and have a monogamous relationship has to do with two things only: me and my love for my partner. It has nothing to do with wanting to resemble heteros or be "normal". I've always wanted a monogamous relationship and I want to enjoy equal rights. My parents were/are hetero and they were/are AMAZING people. And if I were 10-15 years younger, I may have adopted and raised kids and dressed us up for Halloween and taken family photos simply for the fun of it and to have a record of some wonderful memories. "Heteronormative" makes it sound like the whole monogamous/family thing should still only be restricted to heteros and I personally don't see it that way nor do I believe there is anything inherently wrong in a gay person desiring that in their life.

"How gay."

How old are you any way? That's a childish response.

Really?

By your posts, I would think you were used to stupid.

Calling something you don't like 'gay' is what 12 year old girls do. Are you a 12 year old girl?

Because you act like one.
