There is a very popular little bakery at the corner of 105th and Broadway. I have been slipping over there daily to nab a little brioche pastry confection. Light, hint of egg, not too sweet.
A swirly brioche with tart cherries, or some mix of raisins, walnuts, other goodies. They have several different kinds, always changing, made continuously daily. Sometimes whole wheat or raspberry. Some rise up over a little paper cup and some shaped like a cinamon roll.
I cannot take any interest in muffins or donuts or rolls when there is a little brioche calling to me.
Anybody for brioche?

I'm drooling on my computer desk! I, too, an enamoured of these tasty bits of heaven!!
The only brioche I've had were very dry, crumbly, impossible to slice, and not very sweet kind of pastries. Are there other kinds? I can't imagine making french toast out of the ones I've had.

Oh, yes, Jane2, brioche can be exquisite and light, and these are. Brioche is difficult to make, you need a good pastry chef. It requires two risings of the yeast, and the use of less yeast. A cheap place will load up the yeast for a quick rise and make lame, tough bread.

My mom's uncle in Dordogne (sp?) has this huge oven thing, because they all come from a family of bakers, and everytime we go visity we make brioche in shapes of turtle and stuff. They are YUMMY.

That is so funny, Jane2!
I hope someone can help you. I am only familiar with a couple wonderful Italian bakeries on Bleeker Street, but I don't recall seeing brioche there. They have incredible pignola (pine nut) macaroon type cookies, though.
Yeah, Nom, I know those Italian bakeries all too well! I've got the best food stores in the city in my neighborhood-will I find brioche in the bread or cake dept?

Try the pastry or bakery first.

Ah, here's that thread. So I know where to get a brioche (Claude's). What do you suggest I do? make french toast or just eat it as is?
