Anyone else feel as if they are starting to slowly, but surely ruin Broadway songs through commericals? I'm not talking about Sarah Jessica Parker per se, but I do mean overall. They don't even have the originals or anyone GOOD singin the commercials.
For example: today my friend was singing a song from "My Fair Lady". I was surprised she knew it, because she is a very big sports buff... and doesn't know any musicals. I asked her about it, and she said "oh it's from some commercial".
*cringe* I don't want some of the most well-known Broadway songs to be known as "commercial songs".
I hope this is a good discussion topic... Kangaroo

Oh I totally agree!
I haven't heard the "My Fair Lady" commercial though. . .
I have heard several "West Side Story" songs though.
Save Broadway from pop culture!
HAH you know that Aquafina commercial with "I Feel Pretty"? Well kids in my class today were singing it, and they stopped at "it's alarming how charming I feel" cuz the commercial only sings up to that point, and of course they wouldn't know the rest and I go on singing the song..everyone's like "kay..."
and thats my story of the day.
but.....if it gets them interested in Broadway and theater, doesn't that make it ok?
but it doesnt, they think it's a funny commerical, they could care less about the actual show.
most of the people don't even realize it's from a Broadway... unforunately

But I love it! Great topic Kangaroo. I was actually watching TV with a friend when the SJP commercial came on, and I sang the whole song from there, and they were like "Wha?? How do you know that song?"
LMAO
... that is how I felt when my friend started singing the song today at lunch.
I'll have to ask her about the commerical with My Fair Lady... because I've never seen teh commercial before either.

I get so excited when hear showtunes in unexpected places!
Like eBay and Gap commercials!
And the guy on ESPN who sang "Popular"!
I don't like Gwen Stefani's solo work, but heck, some part of my gets a kick out of the fact that she sampled Fiddler on the Roof.
I love seeing evidence that musical theatre has an impact out of the context of a given performance.
Ok, I don't watch tv so much, what does SJP sing for the Gap?

Look on the bright side- the fact that showtunes are still being used in commercials shows that Broadway hasn't completely left the cultural mainstream.
I love the Sarah Jessica Parker commercial.
Let's not forget the Great Gap ads that used West Side Story - Cool and the Dance at the Gym. They were great commercials.
Please, people, isn't it better that Broadway is being exposed to people who wouldn't normally listen to them?
And who can forget the Michael Jordan/Mia Hamm 'Anything You Can Do' Nike ads from a while back....
there's also the "old navy" commercial that mangles "fame"

oh my goodness has anyone heard the "if I were a rich girl" R&B remake of our beloved song?
Because...................*hangs head* I like it.
There is a new commercial out for Jazzy wheelchairs that uses the new theme from MILLION DOLLAR BABY the musical. It is, unfortunately, not sung by Menzel, but by Duff, it's writer.
No I was HORRIFIED to see the "Fame remake".."Shorts!"
I like it when it happens...
B'Way shouldn't be exclusive...
However, I hate it when they only choose the fluff...I don't think I can stand hearing This Is The Moment one more time...
*clears throat*
This is the moment... this is the time... when...

uh, this is the mo-

Cheerios. Always the moment.
*stares expectantly*
I like that Broadway songs are going in commercials... what I don't like is the fact that they are sung by these people who can't sing very well...
And I would just like to say, I hate Gwen Stafani's "Rich Girl" song... she should be sued.

Hey, does anyone remember that hip-hop song that sampled "Hard-Knock Life"?
"Whatever Lola Wants" was in a commercial several years ago. I think it was a clothing ad, but I'm not sure.
