Bonham Carter loved playing Mrs Lovett, and refers to herself as a 'musical whore'. 'I've always loved musicals,' she says. 'Tim thought I was making Billy gay because that's all I'd sing to him.'

no, Penny, I take that comment as just a joke. At least that's how it came across in the interview. We all know there is that stigma about showtunes and whatnot, but it seems Like Burton and Carter wouldn't care about such a thing.

It bothered me, MP...though I doubt there was any harm intended, it is a stupid and bigoted remark by him, and I'm not impressed with her repeating it.

That said, I thought she was the best part of Sweeney Todd. I loved her take on Lovett and thought it was perfect for the film (and was so disappointed when she got the role over Imelda Staunton, Toni Collette and especially Streep.)

This is one of those double-standard remarks. Funny if a gay man says it...offensive if anyone else says it. Personally, I find it mostly harmless and have never seen evidence of homophobia in Carter or Burton.

Of course Burton isn't homophobic. He practically worships Sondheim. He said he's never been more nervous than when he first showed a cut of the film to Sondheim.

Maybe I'm more sensitive to it than other people because my son (who is 5) likes Barbies (no, LOVES Barbies) and people say things like that to me more often than you might think. I find it ignorant, small-minded and, yes, bigoted.

People sometimes add comments like "Aren't you worried?" This implies that there is something "wrong" with being gay.

The fact is, your son is 5, and probably real smart, but kids have no idea what sexuality is at that age. They just play with what they like to play with.

Penny, I think that's it. There was nothing to indicate in the comment that it was a problem. She didn't say, "Tim worried I was making the kid gay" or anything like that. I think it was a joke without malice; I didn't read any implication that there was something wrong with being gay.
