Wow- this thread is expanding by the second so please disregard if this is a duplicate. To preface my earlier post (I've calmed down, but still maintain my fervor), I am extremely passionate about stem cell research. I am exhausted so if anyone recalls the details, please add them...
I believe the question was since embryonic stem cells have yet to cure anyone, why isn't there more focus on adult stem cell research. [I'm a biomedical engineer and spent much time researching this topic. The reason why embryonic stem cell research has yet to cure diseases is because Bush only allowed a very limited number of cell lines (this is what they are called... think of it as if there were 20 cell lines, then each of those could be replicated, but they will all possess the same qualities as the respective parent) and almost all of these lines are from MICE! Therefore there is NO possible way that these cells would be viable in humans. Private stem cell research is feasible and continues, but the lack of governmental funding does not permit the desperately needed competition to drive this research).
Anyway, [sleepily stepping off of my soapbox], Bush answered his question stating that he had the certain number of lines and that was all that was sponsored by Gov't funding. Kerry got up and discussed how the specific number of lines (he gave a number.. it sounded right- I used to know it, but again, I'm tired) were from mice and were not sufficient to yield cures for diseases in humans.
