Hello Birdie

Posted: 1/6/09 at 10:17amI'm all for any movie musical being made, but unless this is is radically different from either of the other two versions, I see no reason for this...

They say in the article that Columbia has been developing this "hip-hop" version for years. I'd say that was radically different.
Ugh.

This has "mess" written all over it.
I'm sure it's going to be targeted to the 16-28 demographic. Do they even have an understanding of a star musician giving up a career to go in the army?

Posted: 1/6/09 at 11:35amI'm seeing Rhianna in the Ann part -- brella, brella, brella.

Posted: 1/6/09 at 11:39amBeyonce is writing a new song that she can sing as Rosie even as we speak.

Posted: 1/6/09 at 11:41amA hip-hop version?????
re: Bye Bye Birdie comes back to the silver screen#9
Posted: 1/6/09 at 11:45amIs it the remaking or the possibility of hip-hop that's making people cringe?

"Is it the remaking or the possibility of hip-hop that's making people cringe?"
Both.
Why don't they spend the money remaking something that has a lackluster version rather than trying to put a new spin on something that has two versions and has been done by every community theater on the planet.

That article is really confusing- is this going to be an updated, hip-hop version or the old fashioned 50's version?
I don't know how you update Birdie as a rap singer- they do know we haven't had a draft since the 70's, right? I guess he could be Israeli or maybe he's going off to prison instead of war.
re: Bye Bye Birdie comes back to the silver screen#13
Posted: 1/6/09 at 12:15pmSo if a credible updated plot could be made - which would most certainly have to be about a war created for the movie, as I can't imagine much joy in a musical about Iraq or Afghanistan, not to mention there's not draft - would the hip hop angle (which no one seems to know for sure if Shankman is even taking) be more palatable? Or is it just a grand, sweeping, distaste of hip hop music that's getting all your knickers in a twist?
re: Bye Bye Birdie comes back to the silver screen#14
Posted: 1/6/09 at 12:16pmNah, it was just a ****ty musical to begin with.
re: Bye Bye Birdie comes back to the silver screen#16
Posted: 1/6/09 at 12:21pmMy first thought with the hip hop idea is how ridiculous "One Last Kiss" would be to a hip hop crowd. Part of the appeal of the original for us looking back is the innocence of the whole thing -- one last kiss being such a big deal. In the hip hop world, where that innocence is LONG gone, the plot would just be ludicrous. Additionally, as mentioned, the war thing would be a pretty big issue -- there's no draft now so a "modern" version would have to be pure fantasy anyway.

I love the original. For me it's the hip-hop angle that I don't like.
But that's just my personal taste, it may work very well updated as a hip-hop musical.
So will Kanye be the new Birdie?
re: Bye Bye Birdie comes back to the silver screen#18
Posted: 1/6/09 at 12:44pmI think Usher would be the new Birdie, and he'd be volunteering for the military.

Posted: 1/6/09 at 12:50pmYeah, it's the hip hop part that's bugging me. And the plot doesn't really make sense that way....like other's have already said.

Posted: 1/6/09 at 12:56pmI'd guess that there would need to be a whole score for a hip-hop remake.
