re: Bye Bye Birdie comes back to the silver screen

I'm all for any movie musical being made, but unless this is is radically different from either of the other two versions, I see no reason for this...

They say in the article that Columbia has been developing this "hip-hop" version for years. I'd say that was radically different.

Ugh.

This has "mess" written all over it.

I'm sure it's going to be targeted to the 16-28 demographic. Do they even have an understanding of a star musician giving up a career to go in the army?

J-Lo should play Rosie

Beyonce is writing a new song that she can sing as Rosie even as we speak.

"Is it the remaking or the possibility of hip-hop that's making people cringe?"

Both.

Why don't they spend the money remaking something that has a lackluster version rather than trying to put a new spin on something that has two versions and has been done by every community theater on the planet.

re: Bye Bye Birdie comes back to the silver screen

That article is really confusing- is this going to be an updated, hip-hop version or the old fashioned 50's version?

I don't know how you update Birdie as a rap singer- they do know we haven't had a draft since the 70's, right? I guess he could be Israeli or maybe he's going off to prison instead of war.

So if a credible updated plot could be made - which would most certainly have to be about a war created for the movie, as I can't imagine much joy in a musical about Iraq or Afghanistan, not to mention there's not draft - would the hip hop angle (which no one seems to know for sure if Shankman is even taking) be more palatable? Or is it just a grand, sweeping, distaste of hip hop music that's getting all your knickers in a twist?

re: Bye Bye Birdie comes back to the silver screen

My first thought with the hip hop idea is how ridiculous "One Last Kiss" would be to a hip hop crowd. Part of the appeal of the original for us looking back is the innocence of the whole thing -- one last kiss being such a big deal. In the hip hop world, where that innocence is LONG gone, the plot would just be ludicrous. Additionally, as mentioned, the war thing would be a pretty big issue -- there's no draft now so a "modern" version would have to be pure fantasy anyway.

I love the original. For me it's the hip-hop angle that I don't like.
But that's just my personal taste, it may work very well updated as a hip-hop musical.

So will Kanye be the new Birdie?
....but the world goes 'round

I think Usher would be the new Birdie, and he'd be volunteering for the military.

Yeah, it's the hip hop part that's bugging me. And the plot doesn't really make sense that way....like other's have already said.

Babydaddy Birdie:

Oh, one last fuk,
Give me one last fuk,
It never felt like this,
No, never felt like this,
You know I need your love.
Oh! Oh! Oh!
Oh, give me one last fuk!
Oh, one more time,
Oh, babymama, one more time,
It really is sublime,
Oh honey, so sublime!
You know I need your love.
Oh! Oh! Oh!
Oh, give me one last fuk,
Ba-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-aby-y-ymama, give me one last fuk!
Ba-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-aby-y-ymama, give me one last fuk!
Oh, one last fuk,
Give me one last fuk,
It never felt like this,
No, never felt like this,
You know I need your love.
Oh! Oh! Oh!
Oh, give me one last fuk!
One last kiss, one last fuk,
Oh, give me one last fuk!
