If you've seen his films you'd know that "how will things fit into things?" is their leitmotif.

re: re: poole party

Sorry, but I REALLY loathed CAMP.

A camp for young, hormone-pumpin' theater students with NO queer action or attraction - Except the old 'gay boy mooning over the unavailable straight boy'. When was the script written, 1971?

I really wanted to see the manipulative Vlad get the living **** kicked out of him.

re: re: re: re: re: re: poole party

I enjoyed CAMP -- for one reason. I'd never seen the "Turkey Lurkey Time" number from PROMISES, and this was the closest I'll probably ever get -- watered-down though it may have been, and performed by high school students. I noted that the choreography was "based" on the original.

Other than that, it was a diversion.

re: re: re: re: re: re: re: poole party

I Think Turkey Lurkey Time is one of the all time worst numbers every written for a show - when I saw it in Camp I could not believe it at all...I was just stunned by how bad it was...LOL!
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" I think that number was a prime example of Bennett making chicken soup out of chicken sh*t -- or in this case, turkey soup out of turkey sh*t. I think it was pretty stupid, too, but it was a showcase for McKechnie (accompanied by Margo Sappington and Baayork Lee), and was the biggest dance/production number in the show -- I think.

But those lyrics? Gracious me: "it's goose-y pooose-y time..." "Have a snowy blowy Xmas..." WTF? LOL

ewwwww - goosey poosey time...yikes - didn't Burt Bacharach write that show? or am I thinking of something else? OY...

RLB,

I actually have seen a video of the original Turkey Lurkey Time. I knew the score for years and HATED that song. After seeing the ladies McKechnie, Lee and Sappington dance the **** out of it, I was left dizzy and delighted. A faaaaabulous production number!

Sondheim's cameo scene made me laugh! Of course, my friends and I would most likely have the same reaction, being the theater dorks we are. Camp is absolutely cheesy and unrealistic, but I loooove the music, and Vlad made me drool...aaaahh. I know people who go to Stagedoor Manor- most love the movie. Fritzi is so very cool: "You are a *scary* little girl..."

Funny Story: In 1993 I did the ten year anniversary tour of Sunday In The Park With George. That same winter, the young woman who played my wife (Yvonne) was riding home on the subway one evening in her tour jacket, and a man standing next to her asked if she had a good time doing the show. She responded with major enthusiasm (we all had the best time doing that tour) saying how much she loved the show and being in it and all...Well, the man speaking to her said something to the affect of "I'm glad you liked it, because I wrote it!" It was James Lapine.

robbiej: OH yes!!! The original "Turkey Lurkey Time" number is pheee-nominal. Michael Bennett was SO f***king brilliant.

I think Jerry Mitchell kept that clip on a continuous tape loop when he was choreographing HAIRSPRAY.

My boyfriend has one of those Broadway Diva DVDs and there's this great number - Life Upon the Wicked Stage (from showboat) - its done by this little girl who looked SO familiar to me - well I finally figured it out - she's the backstabbing little Eve Harrington character from Camp - what a great little actress!
