For breakfast this morning I had a croissant and a cup of coffee. Very nice.
Then my husband went out to run some errands. He stopped at a Bagel Bakery/Deli and came back with the following:
Bagels, Lox and Cream Cheese
One Loaf of Pumpernickel Bread
One Loaf of Sourdough Bread
A Pound of Italian Cookies
Three Large Cannoli
A Bag of Croissants
A Pound of Potato Salad
This is what we will be eating for the rest of today and tomorrow. (Tuesday we leave for NYC.)
Personally, I could never understand "Dr. Atkins." A day without bread is like a day without air, as far as I'm concerned, but I do think Caldwell B. Cladwell has taken things a little far. (Excellent cannoli though!)

I have no problem with carbs. I don't think I could survive a day, without pasta or rice. Never met a cannoli I didn't like. Yum.
I actually just spent this lovely Sunday morning making chocolate donuts. I found a vintage 1970's Dazey Donut Maker, at my local Goodwill store. It was still in the original box, and still wrapped in plastic. It was only $5 bucks, so I had to have it. These are going for over $30 on eBay. Well, it took all morning, since you can only make two donuts at a time. But it was fun, and the results were wonderful. I ONLY ate 4 (hee hee). The rest are tucked away safely in the freezer, for future snacking. Like I said, I have no problem with carbs. :)

Stockard, sounds like we both have "perfect husbands." (Wait. Isn't that an oxymoron or something?)
Lesmis, I would rather eat all of my daily calories in bread and pasta than anything else.
Then again, bread and soup is an EXCELLENT combination, in my opinion!

Lesmis, does he like PASTA at least? (First mention of the word "warm" with bread...how could we have missed THAT?)
Radiana, I think Cannoli is the dessert version of Pizza!

Yes, I heated up the bread so it was all crusty on the outside and warm and soft on the inside.
And of course, real butter on it.
I don't know that I could live without my carbs.....LOL!

Posted: 11/23/08 at 7:41pmIs risotto hard to make? Because it seems like the chefs on Hell's Kitchen are always messing up the risotto.

My less than perfect husband doesn't care for soup. I can forgive him his shortcomings but this is hard to deal with. Anyway if this recession gets worse that's about all he's going to be eating for dinner.

Stockard, I think there are two ways to make risotto. One is the "authentic" way, which involves constant stirring for a looooong time.
Then I think there's a quicker way, but I don't know how. I'm sure someone here can let us know.
#17re: CARBS! You got a problem with that?
Posted: 11/23/08 at 7:45pmIt isn't hard but it takes time. Yoy have to add small amounts of broth gradually to the rice.

Anyone here like couscous? That has got to be one of the simpliest and fastest ways to get a tasty heaping of carbs.

I have an EXCELLENT and relatively easy recipe for a fabulous Seafood Risotto. My quasi-perfect husband makes it, and it is awe-inspiring. If anyone wants it, I am happy to share it.
He makes it sometimes when we have company and the table grows silent once it's served. He just sets it up and puts it in the oven. His mom brought the recipe back from Italy, and it's one of my FAVORITE dishes. (And it's not "fancy"...he makes it when we have guests because you make a lot of it at once, so it's just practical. And DELICIOUS.)
P.S. I love couscous. There's a fab recipe for a vegetable couscous in the Silver Palate Cookbook.
