Tomorrow is our final Dare to Dream conference for approximately a thousand high school students who have some disability. Some are in wheelchairs, some have Down Syndrome, some have a speech impedement, some are blind, some have learning disabilities and look completely "normal". All have a story. We conduct five throughout the state each year in the Spring and students share their stories -- peer to peer. It's thrilling to see them get in front of a crowd of 200 and speak/sing/recite/act/play from the heart. It's one of the most rewarding things I do in my job.
God bless Susan.

Posted: 6/1/09 at 6:21pmI am sure all disabilities are equally challenging in their own way but it always seems especially difficult for those without visibly apparent symptoms. Explaining and/or defending over and over, whether the person can speak for themself or if the parent/caregiver of a non-verbal person speaks for them, is exhausting.

Thanks for posting, Y! I had no idea.
I hope that now with her newfound, if fleeting, fame, she can get the support and assistance she needs and is able to enjoy to some extent her moment in the spotlight. This was her dream after all.

God Bless Susan, indeed, Somms! And, that program sounds SO special!
As you know, it's a topic that hits home for me. These are the special angels in our world.
In reading the link that YWIW posted (thank you!), I am struck by how much the bullying and mis-treatment by society has caused her social difficulties. She may have been challenged with problems sustained at the time of her birth, but the way she has been treated throughout life has had the greater impact.
It makes her performance - and her ability to take this chance - even that much more amazing.
DD, I share your hope that she can take the GOOD that comes of it to be able to make her dream come true.

Happy to help Addy.
In bad news, I just found out my Division is eliminating 150 jobs in the IT area by year end. Bad news for some very hard working people. Only a small percentage is in LA, but other locations are getting killed.
I am not directly impacted, but it is pretty scary.
I cannot wait for the economy to turn around.

That's rough, YWIW. I'm sorry to hear that.
I keep hoping that companies and firms can be given some kind of 'break' if they RETAIN jobs, rather than eliminate them. At this point, I think the threat of unemployment (in addition to the actual unemployment figures) is what is crushing consumer confidence. And, we're stuck in a brutal cycle...
It's all very scary.

I agree Addy. Though my job is safe, the fear of the unknown is pretty strong, and even though I am pretty careful with my money, I am thinking of putting a bit more aside just in case.
It is funny, but I am fighting the urge to buy a new digital camera, and though the cost of it is not significant big picture, it still is making me think twice.
Which, I am sure is being mirrored by millions across the country.

Posted: 6/2/09 at 7:09amGood morning, my darling Deet. Been thinkin' bout you lately. In a good way, promise.

Posted: 6/2/09 at 7:10amWhat are you doing awake at this ungodly hour?
#164re: Can The Adults Please Smoke? Chapter 29: Who Wants Wine?
Posted: 6/2/09 at 7:14amInsomnia. I also slept pretty much ALL day, so I guess this is payback? Who knows.
#165re: Can The Adults Please Smoke? Chapter 29: Who Wants Wine?
Posted: 6/2/09 at 7:21amThat's the difficult part of resting - the temptation to fall asleep, thus throwing your sleep cycle out of whack. What to do?

I took an Ambien AND a Klonopin and I'm STILL awake but tired and can't sleep.
So tomorrow will be crappy and coffee-oriented, I'll manage.

Have a great day!

SOMMS!
Shira, I'm getting concerned about your burgeoning reliance on pills. And don't tell me not to worry. I do. Apparently with good reason, too.

Good morning SOMMS!
Deet - I assure you, I'm not a fan of being drugged like this. I'm looking forward to the end of the line when I no longer need pain meds and can sleep on a normal schedule without having to induce it. I'm keeping very strong tabs on myself.
#170re: Can The Adults Please Smoke? Chapter 29: Who Wants Wine?
Posted: 6/2/09 at 7:38amKeeping strong tabs? Or doing them?
#171re: Can The Adults Please Smoke? Chapter 29: Who Wants Wine?
Posted: 6/2/09 at 7:41amKeeping strong tabs. I've been very focused on eating enough and resting so that I get better. I do like to go out every so often, but other than that, I've been doing as told.

I was just reading this blurb from an e-mail I got about a show called Stunning:
"Lily has everything she ever dreamed of. She's still a teenager but she just married Ike. He is not exactly a charmer and he's really old...like, 40..but he's rich. Now Lily is living the good life in the insular Syrian-Jewish section of Brooklyn in a beautiful new house, with lots of clothes and jewelry, and good friends. If she can just forget about Ike her life would be perfect. When she hires Blanche, a housekeeper, Lily's sheltered world opens up in ways she could never have imagined."
LOL!!
