Wow - have I been away so long that I wasn't around for the start of this thread? Sad panda.
Did have a fantastic weekend, with lots of sleeping, hanging out with friends, getting bike fixed and going on long bike rides, and spending some time out on the softball fields. This will be my first 5-day work week in a long time, it will be hard to get used to.

I saw the pic, Shira. Both times. My heart bled. Twice.
And continuing on in the cynical, misanthropic vein:
Why isn't anyone pointing out the obvious in this whole Susan Boyle fiasco? The woman is slightly retarded, and it's now become a huge, shameful mess, especially shameful for those who have been exploiting her.
And it is all just a little too movie-of-the-week in the way it is all playing out.

Slightly retarded?
What do you base that on, and what do you mean?

D2 - I feel for Susan Boyle as well.
Hopefully, she will be able to find someone who can really care for her as she moves forward. She needs someone who not only cares about money, but cares about her.
Talking about throwing someone to the wolves.

I really don't think she's mentally handicapped in any way - but she is a "simple" folk who has probably lived a very sheltered life. She reminds me of people I know from back home who live out in small towns, and I do believe she has been taken advantage of.
However, I will also say that after all is said and done, she has had the experience of a lifetime, and as trite as it might sound, she's already a winner. She was a winner the minute her original song made it around a the world in a day.

I'm glad you got that I feel for her too, YWiW.
Addy - she was oxygen deprived at birth, and there are certain things she says, certain body movements she makes that indicate more than just a learning disability. J2 hadn't really been paying attention to any of the hype until this weekend, and the first words out of his mouth when he saw her verified my instincts.

Posted: 6/1/09 at 1:21pmI usually ignore any type of hype, so I have not paid one moment of attention to the whole Boyle thing. I see it mentioned on here and the news all the time but am compeltely clueless.

Goood morning!
Deet - *mwah*, and I'm with you on the Susan Boyle issue. She's definitely been exploited.
#135re: Can The Adults Please Smoke? Chapter 29: Who Wants Wine?
Posted: 6/1/09 at 2:45pmI have mixed feelings about it. It's not like they tracked her down, singing in her local choir, and made her try out for the show. She came to them. I highly doubt that anyone could've predicted the world's reaction.

Posted: 6/1/09 at 2:46pmtotally off topic but .....I've been on a Brian D'Arcy James kick lately. I can't tell you how many times I have listened to The Wild Party this week.....What is it About Her has been pretty much on constant replay. ohhhh, that voice.

I hadn't known that she was oxygen deprived at birth, D2. Where did you read that?
I have very mixed feelings about the whole situation, too, Shamey. Mostly I just hope that she is ok emotionally.

Interesting. I just looked up some 'news stories' on the web, as I hadn't heard anything about being oxygen deprived at birth. (Granted, I haven't been following the story that closely).
I have to believe that a childhood of being teased and a lifetime of living a simple and somewhat socially-displaced life is a big part of the behavior and personality characteristics she currently displays.
Whatever the reasons, I hope it never takes away her joy of singing!

You are resting, though, right Shira dear?
Addy, I read about SB being oxygen-deprived in several of the English reports this weekend. It was news to me, also.

What is this with pets with Z names.
D2, I remembered reading about her issues when she first exploded on the scene. There were discussions of her being deprived oxygen at birth, having some learning disabilities, and being terribly teased as a child.
I just think that great care needs to be taken with this women. From afar, it does not appear that she has the emotional maturity to handle everything that is being thrown at her.

I think the differences in her first and final performances speak volumes. The humility that made you love her in the first was gone. She probably got caught up in the praise, flattened by the criticism and it's rocked her well-being. Poor woman.
Happy Monday.

It's a very interesting side of things that I hadn't known or heard about prior to reading what you wrote, Deet.
I am heartened to see that most people are concerned for her, and that there is understanding and support.
