K: Interestingly, I tell my students that they are actors and that they are auditioning. The caveat is that the role that they are auditioning for is "their best self". Not a fake, unnatural illusion, but a fully evolved, complex, interesting version of themselves. In other words, their real self --enhanced. Interviewing is unnatural for most people, so approaching it as a role often allows them to step outside of their discomfort zone. Just this man's opinion.
Ciao..see you all soon.
Undi!
I saw coverage of the concert on the news last night - sounded amazing!
By the way - it's Uniform day on BWW.

Undi - do you think your horoscope is trying to tell you something??
only if it's on a stage and it's not yours...
This is BWW! We LIVE for drama!
That's an inetresting approach, KMF. I've tried to approach an inetrview as though it were an audition and tried to psych myself into playing the self confident part of myself. It does work.
On the subject of the interviewer, they can be just as bad as the person being inetrviewed. In interviewing others, I have always tried to make them feel comfortable and then ask them situational questions to se their thought process and problem solving abilities. Basically trying to find out what their judgement process is. I've been in interviews where the HR person or hiring manager is doing all the talking. i usually leave feeling like I know little about teh job expectations, the company, the atmosphere, etc and will write them off immediately.
I was once interviewed by someone who had been on vacation and had no idea that HR had set up an interview for her she made it very clear that she was busy an was just squeezing me in since I was already there. She proceeded to eat breakfast while we met, had no idea what the job paid, what the benefits were or what exactly the responsibilities would be other than "Getting the admin staff to stop whinning because the sales team treats them badly. The sales people are the money makers and they are under stress."
Sounds like an old boss of mine.
*intercom buzz*
"yes?"
"Get me a buttered roll, scrambled eggs, bacon and a black coffee"
she would then proceed to eat and with her mouth full, talk to me about the day's schedule.
Lovely
sorry all -- got pulled away from the office -- I'm glad this is helping!
Orion -- your story is exactly what I meant by You as the candidate have a job to do too and see if this is a place you wuld see yourself fitting in and prospering..
Addie -- I have my favorites and "zingers" too...we should hare them...if I am interviewing someone to work for me I ALWAYS ask who they admire most in life and why....it ususally takes people a little off guard and comes late in the interview, but that tells me more about them personally than ever....
Be prepared for this one (although very few people us it) -- rather than ask What are your weaknesses (BAD, BAD question) -- I set it up this way -- again, to make the person, stop and think and try to be truthful...
"KMF -- I am sure in your last job you got an annual review....tell me one of the areas your boss wrote on that review that was meant as an opportunity for you to grow in your job...what did he or she say"...(wait for answer)
followup -- 'did you agree with the call out and what specifically did you do to change the way you approached your job.....
K - we should share.
And, I use the same one...referring to the review in a previous job. Interesting...
Addie -- I am officialy convinced we were brother and sister separated at birth!

KMF - that might explain why you're two of the few on this board that I'm actually drawn to on many levels.
In my company, most first interviews are done by asking the prospect the questions... If they are asked back, they are to come back with 10 questions for the interviewer...
Old souls.
I'm convinced.

Addie - I believe you're on to something
kindred spirits, maybe even?
DG - I have had many a late night conversation about it.
joeyjoe - I love hearing about the different styles of interviewing at various companies!
mom - kindred spirits. absolutely.
Addy: I hope you have a pink shirt with pink accessories from the following:

Undi - your icon is killing me - I love it
Frankly, boys and girls, I could use the reminder right now of how we here in our own little corner have found comaraderie. I increasingly feel more and more disenfranchised from the majority of posters here on the board in general, and this oasis keeps me feeling grounded in the fun that it really can be for me. Thank you for that.
cookie - it's one of my favorite stores! (I buy things for John there all the time...)
There's one just a block from my office...
DG, cookie's icon is killing me... in a different way...
