Thanks DG..if I don't laugh though you'll all come to visit me in a padded room. Grandma would fit in so well on this board..she's always been so dramatic.

How's Grandma's penmanship? Or can she use a tape recorder?
Tell her to start recording her family stories and genealogy.
I can give you some links for blank forms, etc. I can even get them in foreign languages.

Beacon I always wanted to do that. She remembers all the old days like they were yesterday. It really is wonderful to hear her talk about growing up in Italy and then coming here. I always get her talking about it to keep her mind going and as a diversion.

*flashes on Barbara Billingsley talking jive in 'Airplane'!!!!*
LOL Rath...
Bboobs...it will keep her occupied and provide a chance for her to leave a legacy for you and your boys. Just park her in a chair and tell her to start talking.
How is her eyesight/reading? English is her second language, right? Would she be happier reading forms in Italian?

Yes DG...I always said I need to do this. Her life would make for a wonderful book to be honest. She is a tough old cookie and was always. That's why she never really had many friends...she always spoke her mind. The other night when I told her I was going to vote she told me that I'd better vote Democrat because since she came to this country she has always been a Democrat. I told her that I would vote that way just for her.

Bboobs, PM me and I'll hook you up with some basic forms you can help her fill out to get started...or set her up with a recorder.
I've got a general list of questions you can ask her (or she can read and answer into the machine) that will guide her as she talks about her life.
AND...a fun activity for her during the day is have her identify folks in old photos. Nothing worse than a pile of old
pictures and you have no clue who they are--except you can see a family resemblance. I have some from the mid-1800s and have made some wild guesses about who is who.
Sorry to ramble but Family History is one of my "things". At holidays my parents refer to my incessant questions as "The Interrogation."
But, I ask you, is it so wrong to withhold gravy until someone tells you the name of their father's eldest sister's first husband???? *flails her arms to make her point*

Sorry DG. I've always been the closest with her..the rest of my siblings could care less what happens to her. It sad to see her mind go...but it's could to laugh so that I don't snap at her. I just keep remembering how old she is...although when she's cursing and yelling at you..you seem to forget.

Mom...that book sounds FABULOUS. Who publishes it?

Now I'm inspired. My great uncle has done extensive research on one branch of the family and has self published 3 volumes on the subject. The other branches of the family are unexplored. I want to get what stories I can from my mother and my grandmothers while they are still here.

BT...
If you want some basics on research: www.familysearch.org
Click on the girl on the lefthand side of the screen. She's a research assistant. There are links that give you five basic steps, plus links for Research Guidance, Forms, Letter Writing Guides for Foreign Language, Research Outlines for all over the world (states, countries). And, a search engine for checking the databases available at the site. And its all free, free, free!
Personal History guidelines are available too...and you can always stop by your local Family History Center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The FHCs are open to the public and there is no admission fee. If you're not sure where the closest one is, you can search for one at www.familysearch.org which is the Church's website. On the right hand side of the home page, the second paragraph Under Library is a link that helps you find an FHC near you.
I volunteer at the one near me.
