The current Pope's past opinion on Harry Potter has been brought to light just before the publication of the next book. Rowling must be doing something right to have earned the enmity of the Catholic church.
Pope condemns Potter.

But Jerby, this isn't JUST the 'religious right', this is none other than ". . . the father of the universal church", and "we would do well to listen to him." (According to "the most prominent Potter critic in North America, Catholic novelist and painter Michael O'Brien")

And I absolutely agree, it IS laughable - especially considering the overt Christian sensibilities she uses as a foundation for most of it - like the holidays they all celebrate, for example!

what is REALLY ridiculous is that the Nazi Pope doesn't even realize that Harry Potter has made many kids READ who otherwsie would not have.
I guess he'd rather have good Catholic kids who don't open a book.
Many kids who did NOT read, started reading because Harry Potter interested them.

I'm sorry but this Nazi Pope has got to go........and I do NOT call him Nazi as an insult to germany...as I LOVE Germany.....it's because of his ties to the Nazi Party during WW2

To be fair, Ratzinger joined the Hitler Youth because that's what was required at the time (to not do so may have had unplesant consequences), and although he was drafted into the German army in WW2, he deserted. I don't think that he is guilty of Nazism, only acute religion...

Of course the children aren't supposed to read. If they read, they might start to ask questions - or learn something that isn't a part of the mind-numbing conditioning that they depend on to keep people in line - and donating.

Quite frankly, I don't think it's particularly healthy to have young minds devouring aspects of the occult. However, as others have already pointed out, the Harry Potter series has kids READING. From what I've skimmed, these books are fairly well written and to my mind that over-rides the negative aspect of the books.

If these books result in developing good reading habits, the kids will eventually formulate their own opinions about the occult and supernatural. Now, "that's a consummation devoutly to be wish'd."

I love when Christians condemn the supernatural.

Because their Magic Sky Person and his zombie son have NOTHING to do with the supernatural.

At least people realize that Harry Potter's fiction.

Boobs - You can sew? Can you make one for me? Mine always end up looking like Laurie Metcalf (male or female) and I just can't bring myself to stick pins in them.

The Pope can say whatever he wants, but Spain made it pretty clear that the Catholic church is losing its grip.

My dad recently reviewed a book that's being called the "Christian Answer to Harry Potter" and said it was one of the worst books he's ever read. The Christian Answer to Voldemort is a former punk-rocker turned evil vicar that conspires with Satan to try to take over the world, and instead of the witty repartee of HP, the characters spout Bible verses like kiddie-concordances.

I just hope Ratzinger doesn't start giving reading suggestions if this is the best the church has to offer in terms of quality literature.

Christian counter-programming to Evil Fiction is endlessly entertaining. It all becomes so gland-handed and condescending and it's always appaulingly written. I've read many a 'Bible Man' Christian super hero comic and they're a hoot, slamming evil and quoting The Bible and everyone cheers.

Ah well, they can't all be C.S. Lewis, I guess.
