re: Catholic Church makes it clear they are anti-Harry Potter.

Master - somehow I have gone this long without hearing how Harry is a gay recruitment tool. Her diatribe reads so much like a satire that it's almost impossible to accept that she's being genuine.

I never cease to be amazed.

edit - ok, so now I've read more of Ms. Bowers, and realize it is a satire. Whew.

Actually, she's pretty funny!

"Catholic church makes it clear they are anti-harry potter"
I'm catholic. Did 9 years of Catholic school and everything and I am NOT anti-harry potter. This "Harry Potter is evil" thing is such a joke. It makes people think that Catholics are really strange. Well I can tell you that just because the Pope says something, it doesn't speak for all Catholics which seems to be the way it always comes across.

Ha! Harry Potter is gay and a gay recruitment tool. That Betty Bowers thing is really laughable at how ridiculous it is.

You may know what you need but to get what you want better see that you keep what you have.

The Betty Bowers is a satire, as is the entire site.
Hey, now the CC has decided evolution is "wrong," too. "That's not how it happened..."

This pope is the man, remember, who thought that the pedophile scandel was largely a "media event." The scandel that will now cost the Church over a BILLION $$$.Some media event, huh?

Mel, I feel for you. And just for the record, I came from a complete immersion in Catholicism.

However, while I accept that it may not represent how some who identify as Catholic feel individually, the fact remains that his word and the stance of the church as an institution is made quite clear. And to the rest of the world, that's what counts.

How does the church feel about Cinderella? Snow White? Or any other piece of children's fantasy lit? I think the Pope is just pissed because Rowlins is a better writer than God and knows how to captivate her audiences.
PEACE.

DGrant--you are so right! The Church AS AN INSTITUTION is the point here; individual Catholics may disagree, but that's not the point, is it? And under the last pope, the Church moved further away from John XXIII and back to full hierarchcal mode. Priests were silenced if they dissented, and liberation theology was essentially banned. The current pope has referred to homosexuality as "intrinsically evil," another laugher. Can you imagine the Church without its gay priests?

BTW--I was raised Catholic, and went to Catholic schools for 12 years.

As The Pope is believed to be infalliable by Catholics in the ways of the church, as far as being a spokesperson for Catholicism he absolutely DOES speak for everyone.

That is why I am no longer a practicing Catholic. I was raised with the idea that "It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle, than a hypocrite to enter the kingdom of Heaven".
Being pro-choice, pro gay rights, NOT believing in the sacrement of the confessional. I was a BAD Catholic thus I excommunicated myself.

The belief that Harry Potter is evil shows a very poor understanding of the books and of the theology they use to condemn them.

In today's society, Harry Potter is one of the few popular messengers teaching MORALITY.

A quick search on-line brought up an interesting tid-bit.

A 20% discount of HPandTHBP was ordered by "Little Joey Ratzinger, The Big House on the Square, Rome, Italy." With special instructions to "deliver in a plain brown wrapper with no return address. Deliver ONLY to addressee."

Rewinding back to Elphaba's statement on the Pop not realizing that this helps kids read...
Elphie,
The Catholic Church does not realise that condoms prevent AIDS and other STD's either.
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

The Catholic Church needs to get a clue. Get over yourselves already! As someone who was raised Catholic and went to Catholic school through high school, I do NOT practice anymore because of the church's ridiculous views on things like this...and I can't be gay??? HELLO! So if your god didn't create me who did?? Anyway, lots of issues with the church. :)

Boobs - I have a feeling the pubic hair thing won't be a problem. They can probably be found on the floor of most cruise bars or confessionals. All I need are some tweezers...

So they are upset over witches and wizards, talking animals, mythical creatures and children doing battle against evil. Hmm that sounds alot like the Narnia novles that are "approved" by Christian authorites.

re: Catholic Church makes it clear they are anti-Harry Potter.

No, just the new Pope is anti-Harry. Paul II made it clear a few years ago that he had no problem with the books and, indeed, praised JK Rowling's delightful series and (I'm paraphrasing), "Christian values", which really should be obvious to anyone with half a brain who's read them.

Rose - interestingly, these letters were written by the current Pope 2 years ago - during JohnPaul's 'reign'. They are just being released publically now in time for this new book release.

re: Catholic Church makes it clear they are anti-Harry Potter.

C.S. Lewis wrote the Narnia books as a fairly obvious parralel to the New Testament and Christianity. But they do exist purely in their own literary world as well. Reading the books as a kid in Catholic school I wasn't especially aware of the parallels, until I read some about Lewis himself.

So when you go see the movie this December yell out 'JESUS CHRIST, IT'S ASLAN' the first time you see the big lion.

I am actually waiting for the Jewish version of Harry Potter to come out in the bookstores. It will be called Heshy Potterstein. He is a Urologist turned sorceror........Actually, my nephew was reading Harry Potter books at the age of 4. That is how he learned to read. He is 8 today and always has his nose in a book. Better than the Sally , Dick and Jane crap I had.
