Some of us on this board are Catholics, and I for one - maybe I'm the only one - am getting pretty sick of the constant bashing my faith takes in here. If it isn't bigotry it's getting closer every day.

I should make clear what I object to. I think the disapproval of Harry Potter books is ridiculous - I haven't read what the statement was, but I'll take your word for it.

What I object to is the invective and the tone of obvious contempt for my faith and my church that crops up at every opportunity - even on the "Do you believe in God" thread. I've got too many Irish ancestors martyred for that faith not to have the guts to speak up now.

justthefacts - I respect completely your right to have whatever belief you wish. But I also don't see why other people shouldn't have the right to question that which they find objectionable.

As to your ancestors, I don't doubt their existence. I am curious, however, if you also have the guts to face the millions of descendants of those slaughtered in the name of the Catholic Church?

Justthefacts, I don't think anyone has bashed you faith, just the horrible institution that has built a dynasty with the blood of your ansestors. It is the "Catholic CHURCH" not Catholic's faith that is the problem.
PEACE.

Is disliking a religion a form of Bigotry?
"Do you know what pledge time is, Andrew"? said the PBS Executive. "Yes", Lloyd Webber replied. "My 50th birthday special must be one program that gets done a lot." "No", mused the man from PBS heedlessy. "Not so much. Our Stephen Sondheim Carnegie Hall concert. That's a big one." Spoons, forks and knives seemed suddenly to suspend their motion in horror, all around the table.

"Is disliking a religion a form of Bigotry?"

I don't think holding a group of people responsible for the behaviors they've engaged -- or their chosen leaders have engaged in -- in the name of their chosen faith to be bigotry. It's not like I'm on ... oh what's the word ... a CRUSADE to go around and brutally slaughter people who don't agree with me. I mean what sort of monsters would do that? Oh, wait ...

I don't like the actions of the Catholic leadership, I don't think calling them out on it and making the otherwise good Catholics of the world look their leaders' views in the eye to be a form of bigotry. Smell the coffee already. They make your bed ... etc ...

re: catholic church makes it clear they are anti-harry potter.

I read somewhere once that more people have died on the planet in the name of (various) religion(s) than in all wars combined.....

The catholic church is bigoted towards me and my partner.............you can't have it both ways. You are damn right I am bigoted towards them.

any religion that:
1. raises one group of people up, yet keeps others down
2. keeps people in (mental) chains
3. tells people to kill people simply because their faith is different
4. Actively campaigns to deny equal rights to groups of people
5. wants to stick their nose in what science can or cannot explore so that people can live better lives
6. wants to tell everyone NOT in their faith whom to marry
7. will not be honest with teenagers about sex.......(ie rubbers will go a lot further protecting against AIDS than absinence.....simply because catholic kids WILL have sex no matter what the Nazi Pope thinks)
8. Refuses to clean up its own pedophile mess.

is worthy of me feeling bigoted towards them...DEAL WITH IT

re: catholic church makes it clear they are anti-harry potter.

The Catholic Church as an institution supports bigotry and hatred. It is not "bashing" to point this out. The Church takes stands, including, but not limited to, no birth control for married people, no sex at all outside of marriage, and within marriage only for procreation, no right to choice on abortion, and of course, us "intrinsically disordered and evil" faggots. Not to mention that the Church refuses to grant women equal status. How many deaths is the Church directly responsible for, not only in its various and many "crusades" but in its refusal to allow basic human dignity for whole groups of human beings?

We are "bashing" when we point these things out? Hardly, though that's sure the way to spin it...

re: catholic church makes it clear they are anti-harry potter.

I will add, that I do feel this way about most religions....not just the Catholic Church.....and I'd like that known. I don't want to come out as a catholic-basher. Any western religion tends to earn my disrespect.

My point is not to make any catholics feel bad, but rather think about what their religion feels, and question it.

How about a hand for those Holy Wars...

The Catholic Religion practices in Bigotry.

I love when Christians condemn the supernatural.

Because their Magic Sky Person and his zombie son have NOTHING to do with the supernatural.

At least people realize that Harry Potter's fiction.

I couldn't have said that better myself.

This is just another reason for me to laugh AT the Catholic Church and their absurdities.

Why am I NOT surprised? This Pope is even more conservative than the last one. Welcome to the world of the religious right, folks!

re: catholic church makes it clear they are anti-harry potter.

Thank you, everyone, for responding to me. I respect your positions and the way you presented them to me, and I appreciate that you did address my feelings.

Elphaba, I didn't read the statement because that wasn't the issue for me when I wrote. In the instance of Harry Potter, I am more than willing to accede to your evaluation, and I said that.

I know I'm not going to change anybody's attitude about this, and really, I'm not trying. I just felt a need to say something. Basically, whatever you have to throw at my church -okay, here I am, you can throw it at me. I'm a Catholic. I am my faith. I am not ashamed of it. I'm not a great Catholic - maybe one day I'll be a better one. There is so much to love in this beautiful faith. It's almost impossible to explain why I felt I had to step out in front of what was being said.

Anyway, thanks again.

re: catholic church makes it clear they are anti-harry potter.

Just - because you were willing to speak your mind in what was apparently a hostile environment, I applaud you (well, it IS a theatre site, after all!) Quite frankly, any Christian - and Catholics are only a part of that designation, however much they claim being the first - that can live their lives according to what Christ ostensibly came to teach us - "Love one another" - has my complete respect.

I wish you well on your journey, and only hope that you continue to be a PART of your faith, which means asking questions and forming your own reactions to the answers.

re: catholic church makes it clear they are anti-harry potter.

ditto to what DGrant said....

and frankly you don't need to change anybodys attitude.....you have a right to what you believe in.It is not my thing, but who am I to say it's not yours?

But I will continue to question religions, governments, businesses, and anything else that feels it's their 'duty" to tell me how to live, and who to love....until the day I am dead.
