I am leaving for Canada in the a few hours to visit Toronto, Stratford, and Niagara Falls and I was wondering if it is possible to use the WiFi on my iPhone without using roaming or Data? Could I disable the Data and put my phone in airplane mode but still use WiFi without any charges? I will have my computer but would like to use my apps as well! I need to get past level 79 on candy crush I've been stuck for a week!
I figured if I asked here someone would be able to help me out!
Yes. Put it on airplane mode. I do it every time we travel.
Thanks JG. I thought so, but wanted to make sure!
you should call your phone company and buy foreign minutes, this will save you tons of money, and as stated above, keep your phone on airplane. thats what i did.

Yes, turn on airplane mode and disable your data. That's what I did before I went on a cruise.
I have never heard of buying "foreign minutes" from a cell company.
Jersey, we just did it in May, they have a whole bunch of different plans. at least AT&T and Verizon do

The OP just wants to disable data and use wifi then the foreign roaming plan is completely pointless and needlessly expensive. The OP said right from the start that they don't want to be paying for roaming charges.
Right, you can pay for international roaming which is ridiculously expensive.
Now I just have to figure out how to get a mobile wifi hotspot for my trip without paying too much for it.
Jersey, Not sure where you are going, but if you are going to Europe, even parts of Eastern Europe, they have way more Free WIFI then here, most public places, including parks, bars, cafes, hotels and shops which wont help you with calling but will with txting and internet. I did buy the international roaming plan and used it sparingly. its not that expensive esp compared to what you would normally pay.

But your responses have nothing to do with the OP's original questions...
thats why i addressed it to Jersey who asked the question
I go to Canada quite often, and do not use anything there but my phone and my camera. My brother stupidly used his phone for FB in Canada and got a $400 bill.
If you have ATT, they lowered their prices for international roaming about 18 months ago...For $120, you can add 800MB of data...which is more than enough for me to post pix or comments on Facebook, or check email for the entire time I am in Europe. For another $10 you can get 50 texts if you want to send....to receive it's 25 cents each. There is also a $5 a month plan for calling within Europe or back to the US, which I get but rarely use.
I am going to the US. I live in Sweden. There is not more free Wifi here than in the US. If you have phone service, there are lots of hotspots, but they are carrier specific. McDonald's and a few other places have it.
My mom actually has an iPad with 4G, so we're just going to take that and either use it as a hotspot for our phones or just use it to make Skype calls. I already have the yearly subscription to unlimited Skype to US numbers. Now, for like $40, I can get a phone number, local to my hometown, so my family can call me on the Skype app on my iPhone for free. I loves the net!
