i never saw chita as anita cuz i wasnt even born when she played the role so i would have to pick rita.
but in all fairness, being puerto rican i have to say i am proud these two lovely puerto rican ladies were given the opportunity to truly show their talent in such a great role. as a puerto rican i can say we are very proud of both of them for their many accomplishments.

Love them both and since I never saw Chita as Anita I can't cast a vote. I have had the pleasure of meeting Ms Moreno several times and she is an angel on earth. Very kind to the little people.
PS. The Chita/Rita song is hysterical.

At least Chita did her own singing.
I recently viewed the movie for the first ime in like 20 years, and Rita Moreno and George Chikiris come across like a couple in their late 20's oe early 30's, not like teenagers. The Jets and Sharks are supposed to be JUVENILE delinquents - in other words, under 21.
At least Natalie Wood looked fairly convincing.

Have you ever seen the Katharine Hepurn version of Little Woman?
The actresses might look thin, but they don't look little nor do they look young. I think wanting to look more mature was the thing until the 70s and it was accepted by the public.

"At least Chita did her own singing"
Rita did her singing, also.
Natalie Wood did not.

Posted: 8/29/04 at 11:50amCorrect and though Rita did ok dancing I think Chita could probably dance circles around Rita. I love Rita anyway. :)

Posted: 8/29/04 at 1:11pmI never saw Chita, but I pick her because I like other things that she has done.

rita did her own singing in west side story, the ONLY song she was dubbed on was the "a boy like that/i have a love" duet and you hear her say so in the documentary thats included on the 2 disc special edition dvd.
as far as her "age", i don't think chita rivera was exactly a teenager herself when she played the role.
FYI: Rita Moreno was Jerome Robbin's first choice for "Anita" when they were staging "West Side" for Broadway. Prior film commitments prevented Rita from doing the role on stage.
When the movie version was finally going to be done Robbins immediately hired Rita for "Anita", she was one of the first, if not the first one cast.

It was while he was creating his ballet "N.Y. Export Opus Jazz" Mr. Robbins got the idea for "West Side Story".
The Joffrey Ballet will be performing "N.Y. Export Opus Jazz" this spring - March 9 through March 20 in Chicago. This rarely performed ballet is reentering the Joffrey repertoire after a 25 year absence.

You can see a very young Chita singing and dancing on the Judy Garland Show (first box set).
PS, Marquise, thanks for putting your icon of yourself back on. Don't ever take that one away!
