I thought it was announced directly after last year's telecast that Billy Crystal would be hosting again? Perhaps his new one-man show wouldn't allow for it. Shame.

I don't like this choice at all. Whoopi Goldberg is great, as is Billy Crystal. Heck, even though Steve Martin wasn't so great his last turn, I'd rather have him.

Chris Rock??

The Oscars are an elegant, professional, elaborate, established ceremony. I don't see Chris Rock being any of those.

Funny? Sure. But I don't think his style is appropriate for the Oscars.

Discuss!

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Elegant? Are we forgetting the Goldberg Years? At least Rock is FUNNY.

I think he is a great choice. What is so classy about the Oscar's? Women wearing swan dresses? Rob Lowe singing with Snow White?

I think this is an odd choice, and it will surely be funny.
However, Chris Rock certainly does not jump into my mind when I think about OSCAR NIGHT...

Whoopi was great. She had class. At least in the two ceremonies I saw her host.

Crystal is the best. He is cool, smooth, classy, and hilarious. Respected.

Steve Martin, in his last hosting ceremony, was held-back some. Funny, just not appealing.

Chris Rock is funny, and I'll even say he is hilarious. And I am sure he will get a lot of laughs and recognition.

But his attitude/body language, and sense of humor, I believe, is inappropriate.

Whoopi wouldn't know class if she was in one.

Explain your thinking. I don't see how you could say she doesn't have class.

She is one of the most crass, vulgar human beings on the planet. Not only in public, but in private. That's all I'll say. And I'm not being funny.

Veteran members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have grown concerned over the choice of Chris Rock as host of this month's awards show. Concern deepened after Rock claimed only gays watch the Oscars! "I never watched the Oscars. Come on, it's a fashion show," Rock recently declared. "What straight black man sits there and watches the Oscars? Show me one!" Rock added: "Awards for art are f---ing idiotic."

Academy members have privately called for Chris Rock to be removed as host, sources claim, fearing Rock may "tarnish" the reputation of the Academy. "Simply put, this is a disgrace," one veteran Hollywood mogul, who asked not to be identified, said from Los Angeles. "This guy is out there saying 'awards for art are f---ing idiotic' and he is hosting the show produced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences? I guess the joke is on us!" One nominated actress questions whether producer Gil Cates was even aware that Rock has "never watched the Oscars."

Other unpublicized comments made by Rock threaten to throw the scheduled Feb. 27 broadcast into complete chaos. During a recent hate-filled rant, Rock imitated a White House press briefing: "Mr. President, what about gay marriage? 'F**k them faggots,'" Rock said of Bush.

What will Rock be wearing to the show? "Nothing against people who aren't straight, but what straight guy that you know cares? Who gives a f---?" Rock explained.

I love Chris Rock, but never thought he was right for the Oscars. The Academy is getting exactly what they deserve. They wanted Chris Rock in order to attract a younger, hipper audience. Well, now they've got him. T.F.B.

Are you sure Matt? This thread was started back in October of last year. I was a little confused at first myself. DGrant resurrected it, rather than start a new one.

okay okay okay. SOMEONE asked why I posted to this thread and I just read it thinking it was started yesterday. That's what sitting in bed with the flu will do to your mind.

ANYWAYS, I hope everyone has a happy Valentines Day. re: Chris Rock To Host Acamedy Awards - Good Omen, or Bad Omen?

I've been unhappy with this choice since it was announced. After watching the BAFTAs this weekend, and listening to Mr. Fry's wit and erudition, I'm not sure I'll even be able to watch.

I abhore the guy and I think he is the worst choice the Oscars' commitee could have made. I don't find him funny AT ALL and I think he is prejudiced, hateful and a HIDEOUS actor ! Was it so hard to find a nice looking, smart, funny, elegant and currently succesful actor/actress for a change ? Of cource I'll still watch the ceremony, but i am just wondering !

Take care

I definitely won't be watching this year. I've never liked Chris Rock and his brand of humor.

If Chris Rock is right and the Academy Awards are for women and gay men, then let's stop nominating all these stupid sports movies! Let's go back and give "Moulin Rouge" the Oscar and hire Harvey Fierstein to host. Let's decide the Best Actor categories with a swimsuit competition andwhile we're at it, give Nicole Kidman some Oscars for her "pretty" roles.

And production numbers, please! LOTS more production numbers!
