Last year's host was Billy Crystal.
I'm looking forward to Chris Rock. His comedy is smarter than you may think. He has writers from the awards show and has no doubt been given previous telecasts to view. I'm hoping he will be a hit.

Posted: 2/14/05 at 5:10pmLast year was Billy Crystal? How bizarre that I somehow have skipped a year. I don't remember that at all! What did Shandling host? If I was blonde, I would be such a blonde. Anyhow, I do like Rock's standup material that I've seen. He's purposely politically incorrect, but I wasn't offended by him.

I understand the academy is getting cold feet . When they hired him what did they think they were getting ? Bob Hope. The guy is edgy so they need to be prepared
Wonder if they will have it on a slight tape delay or have really good editors @ the ready.

When I think of movies, Chris Rock is the first person who comes to mind.
This is about as silly as people proposing Ellen Degeneres host the Tonys. Not because she has anything to do with theater, mind you, but because they like her.

Posted: 2/15/05 at 5:32amwhy does there even need to be a host? eliminating the host would save money and cut the show's running time by at least an hour.

Posted: 2/15/05 at 5:37amIt was already going to be a boring year...and if he's hosting? I'll be watching old Academy Award winning movies instead...

Posted: 2/15/05 at 5:52amI said something about that earlier in the thread. He is one of my faves, but I really think he does splendidly - with just the right undertone of sarcasm about it all.

the reports of Academy members wanting Rock removed are apparently wrong:
http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Movies/02/15/oscars.rock.ap/index.html
"The academy has heard no grumbling from its members and has no intention of even suggesting that Chris step aside," [Gil Cates] said.

Posted: 2/15/05 at 12:06pmI couldn't believe it when they announced this person would be hosting. Now he is badmouthing the event he will be hosting? I hope this turns nasty and the Academy ends up regretting this big time. I wasn't going to watch as I find him racist and basically repulsive, but now I may have to.

The fact that Chris Rock doesn't immedietely spring to mind when you think about potential Oscar hosts is a good thing. The majority of last year's Oscars telecast was boring. I spent most of the time laughing at Billy Crystal (read:not laughing with). Though I remember when Jack Black and Will Ferell sang 'You're Boring' that either one of them would have made excellent hosts.
Also, to the person who argued that Chris Rock shouldn't host the Oscars because he isn't a movie star? Two words: Johnny Carson.

Posted: 2/16/05 at 2:01amWell, DGrant, I happen to think that Chris Rock is a brilliant and intelligent comedian. I'm guessing you have never seen one of his shows?

Posted: 2/16/05 at 2:13amActually, Jerby, I have - and I agree, he's a brilliant comedian. That doesn't necessarily translate into the world of the Oscars. I also happen to like David Letterman, nes pas?

Posted: 2/16/05 at 2:17amWas last year when Billy Crystal appeared in the nude (with a potbelly and saggy breasts) or was that the year before?

Posted: 2/16/05 at 2:26amThank you, Evelyn! That points strongly to my not understanding what the big deal is. Who's to say what the Oscars should BE? Is he any worse than Whoopi?--who until now is probably Oscar's most blunt and "dangerous" host.

Posted: 2/16/05 at 2:32amJerby - comparing Rock to Whoopi is like comparing Pryer to Pearl Bailey. Not anywhere NEAR the same playing field - and I love them both. I'm just not sure that Chris can be the Chris that's effective if the Academy is going to get a host that works.

Well, I'll be watching - and I'll not have any hope for his failure. I just want to enjoy the spectacle, that's all
#48re: Chris Rock To Host Acamedy Awards - Good Omen, or Bad Omen?
Posted: 2/16/05 at 9:45amWell, Rock has worked on 20 films, been nominated for 8 Emmys (for stand-up specials, writing, and his show) and won 2, nominated 3 times for the American Comedy Award and won once, so I don't see his appointment as host as a huge surprise. I never thought I would like him until I saw his stand-up once and I loved it. I have a feeling he will tone it down a bit for the show, but he is an incredibly smart and talented comedian. I'm really looking forward to it. The host is there to provide jolts of spontenaity and fun to the program and I think he'll pull through. I wish we could somehow get Eddie Izzard up there as well.

Posted: 2/16/05 at 9:50amGive me a choice between Rock and Goldberg and it's no choice at all - Rock all the way. He's clever, intelligent, and funny. I don't find her to be any of those things.
