Cinderella's Lily James accused of being a racist.

Lily James got into a little bit of hot water during the Tokyo premiere of Cinderella earlier this week. Fans apparently thought she was mocking the Japanese accent after posting this on Instagram, "Shinderera’ premiere in Tokyo. The final stop on our tour and it was a beautiful cold night, thank you!" She later cleared up the misunderstanding by saying this, "‘From a Japanese teacher: “Shinderera” is the name of the movie in Japan, like Ciencienta is the name in Spanish-speaking countries, and Cendrillon in French and Aschenputtel in German. When discussing fairy tale characters they didn’t know who ‘Cinderella’ was, I had to say the Japanese name to make them understand."

I'm not sure how I feel about this. Do you think fans were taking this too seriously or should Lily have just not included the Japanese title in her Instagram?

It would be different if that was not what they were calling it in Japan. "Shinderera," is used in place of Cinderella in Japanese animation. The outrage is ridiculous.

If that's the title of the film and the character's name in Japanese, how would her posting it be considered racist to anyone other than people totally ignorant of Japanese?

Of course she is a racist.  But I too, am a racist so I understand.  You see, back in the day, I was playing basketball with a gentleman who identified himself as African-American or what we used to call back in the bad old days "a black guy" and he made a particularly skillful and creative shot to score a basket at a crucial point in the game.  I uttered the inappropriate and racist comment "Nice shot bro", and, you see, he was not my actual brother by birth or marriage. Well, it didn't raise an eyebrow then but clearly by today's standards, it would be horribly racist and I now understand the error of my ways and regret my racist statement.

So too with Lily. By trying to show respect to the locals by using the proper name in their own language, in the eyes of a few stupid 12 year olds with an internet connection and an ignorance of the Japanese language, she is clearly a racist.  And of course the UK version of the National Enquirer would feature it front page because it is an important matter to be discussed worldwide and not in any way shape or form to generate pages views from people with too much time on their hands.  Thank goodness this morning they are bring us other breaking worldwide stories as "Woman wakes up from coma, learns she's given birth" and "Miley Cyrus posts naked selfie in bathtub".  I can certainly understand the OP not being sure how he/she feels about this.  It's pretty unclear and certainly a slippery slope.  Well let me resolve any indecision or question.  She is clearly, a racist.

I love you F-Bob.  One time a long time ago here, one of the worst trolls posted something racist and I posted, "of course you're racist, of course I'm racist" and It went into this whole, "Speak for yourself, Namo, for I am surely not," and I realized people no longer have venues that encourage them to take fierce moral inventories of their behaviors.

I think the best thing we can all do is show unbridled support for the movie by going to see it repeatedly.  That's my plan at least and as a middle aged male, I will bravely ignore the 10-14 year old girls for whom the movie was intended staring at me and wondering aloud "ewwww, why is he here?".

I knew it was her doing that forced Julian Fellowes to change Downton Abbey's storyline so she wouldn't end up getting involved with the black jazz musician.  Of course Fellowes had the last laugh, after finding out she hated Jews as well, and had her carted off the show married to one.

She was saying the name of the movie in Japanese.  How could that possibly be objectionable?

Now, there may arguably I guess be an issue as to who named the Japanese version of the movie and why and whether that might suggest something objectionable.  But how the hell would that be Lily James's fault?

And speaking of James.  Her singing on "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" over the end credits of Cinderella is, like everything about her performance, totally winning and lovely.

 At first I was not sure if it was a smart thing to do to use a foreign title on her Instagram because it would cause some confusion. I thought that maybe it would have been better if she just used the English title. But now I do feel that her fans are taking this way too seriously.

If she was aiming her post at the Japanese market, though, why would she use the English title? There is a whole world outside of the US, and not everything is for our benefit.
