Yes, the "us or them" mentality is the problem, and it is one that her political party has relentlessly exploited over the years.

I don't discriminate against Republicans. I don't deny their right to marry, vote, reproduce, adopt children, or hold public office. They can worship the God they want to worship. They can join the military if they like. They can buy property and dispose of their property as they see fit. I wouldn't fire anyone from their job just because they're Republican. In short, I don't do to Republicans what Republicans are so adamantly interested in doing to me.

I'm suspicious of all of these "open-minded" Republicans whose "open-mindedness" only becomes apparent when they aren't in office, or in a position to do anything official about their alleged "open-mindedness." I will continue to be so. Looks like you're far more trusting than I am on this issue. Congratulations.

I do say the same about the Dems, especially about the Bigot In Chief. And when the First Mannequin waits until after she's no longer in the White House to announce her support for same sex marriage, I'll be as scathing at her as I am at Cindi The Junkie.

Does anyone doubt Roscoe will be scathing..at everyone? Everything? Forever?

What does it feel like to be so mired in ignorance and rage that every little thing, every comment, every gesture, ignites a firestorm of anger?

Meanwhile, if OJ donates to women's shelter it may be a hollow gesture, but those women benefit from it.

Fair enough, the OJ example wasn't quite right, as Cindi hasn't donated any money (that I know of, at least) to the issue at hand.

Consider the example changed to: if OJ did a single photo op for abused women's rights.

And at least you acknowledge the hollowness of the gesture.

AH, see THERE'S that Ignorance of which I spoke. I'll endeavor to educate you, Roscoe:

In 1888 a French newspaper erroneously published Alfred Nobel's obituary. The obituary stated 'The merchant of death is dead' and went on to say, 'Dr. Alfred Nobel, who became rich by finding ways to kill more people faster than ever before, died yesterday.'

Shocked by this, Nobel decided to leave the bulk of his vast fortune to establish prizes for accomplishments in science, arts and "the establishment or furtherance of peace."

Did he do it to burnish his own tarnished image? Was he trying to buy his way into heaven? Isn't it hypocritical for a man who built his wealth through the waging of war to reward peacemakers?

Frankly I don't care- he did good, for whatever reason, by establishing the prize.

Thanks for sharing the little factoids about Nobel, which I already knew. I don't see what they have to do with my post about the "charmingly mercenary" quality of your position about the clearing of the check being all that matters.

My position remains -- I have doubts about Cindi McCain's sincerity on the gay marriage issue, and view it as a headline-grab, a sham attempt to buy some credibility for the Repubs on gay issues. When she has done more than participate in a photo op, I'll have a little more respect for the lady and her position, and I'll actually say so. I'll go further. When Cindi McCain actually appears at some rallies, and appears at some marches, and puts some time and money where it is needed, I'll acknowledge that her commitment is genuine.

Till then, I'm unimpressed.

I will continue to be suspicious of all who have ever been members of the Republican establishment who suddenly announce that they have markedly liberal views that they kept completely under wraps until after they were in a position of influence.

I'm sorry. I thought the whole point was that we're supposed to be CHANGING the views of people.

I didn't realize the only people we could support were people who have been agreeing with us for years.

I'll stop changing people's minds ASAP, Roscoe. In fact, I'll go back to the ones whose minds I've been able to change and tell them to go back to the old thoughts.

Goodness, PalJoey. People are free to change their minds on all issues at all times. Agreed, we'll never get anywhere unless folks evolve their opinions. But I can't see that accepting such announcements as these at face value, coming as they do people who have been a major part of the organization that has done so much to further the exact opposite position, is anything other than sheer gullibility.

And for the record - as long as McCain is still holding and/or running for office, she has as much voice as she's going to have.

I think she might have started with something a little more substantial than a photo-op. Maybe a press conference or something like that to announce her position, or an in-depth interview with a serious same-sex marriage activist.

Well, that 'photo-op' has already caused McCain to have to clarify on the record that he doesn't agree with the members of his own family on the issue. That alone makes it a little more than an empty gesture, in my book.
